Not a good weekend for west coast racing people. Glen Howard passes, John Force badly hurt and Alex Pruitt passes away.
From indianaopenwheel.com
Alex passed in his sleep at our house in Arizona. In May Alex was treated for diabetic shock but showed no signs of further issues. We do not know the cause but feel it could be related. Please do not speculate as he was with us inour care for the past 48 hours.
Alex loved a lot of you and counts many firends in Indiana. Please honor his memory as a wonderful young man with a big heart.
Thanks to all of you who have called with your thoughts and prayers
Steven Pruett

Steven and Family
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We can't even begin to imagine what you are going through.
Alex was a very nice young man, we met you at Hanford one night and we talked about Butler seats. Alex told me all about his, showed it to me and that is what we bought for our son.

Steven I feel for you and Alex's mother, like I've never felt pain before. Your loss is tremendous and since reading about this tragedy as i arive home from manzi, Im dumbfounded and in shock. I never imagined this would happen to such a fine young man. Im so thankfull he was in my life the way he was and his character and lust for life carries me on . I remember just like it was yesterday he got out of my car only to slip o n the ice and wound his knee the night before the final night at the chili bowl.We called him the "The Gimp Pimp" becuase he had to limp around the next day and carry a cain through the pits.I remember kicking with him all over the country , race tracks, PRI ( especialy good times forever to remember ,my friend) , Arizona , Barona ,............
I know God has taken you for a reason beyond our understanding , maybe He needed some good company , but forever I will never forget the most unique , kind hearted , humourous and fiercly competitive friend which i am now in losss of words as I miss my dear friend.
Thankyou for your inspiration my young friend , You are missed and I love You . I can only hope my son will be so influencial yet humble.

What a heart wrenching piece of news. I became an instant Alex Pruett fan the very first time I met he and Steve. They are great people and dearly love the sport of auto racing. I had the pleasure of seeing Alex again earlier in the year. As always, he was cracking jokes and was as happy as one could be. Just a great-great young man.
From best as I can recall, Alex won his last race in late August in a USAC regional race in Indiana. He finished third in another regional race in Illinois earlier this month. That might of been his last race but I'm not sure.
To Steven: We can all take pride that we were graced with Alex's presence and good natured attitude. You can hold your head high that you raised Alex to be such a great young man. God bless you and your family and I hope to see you at the races in the near future. I can envision Alex getting his orientation up above and being asked at the end: "Alex, do you have any questions?" To which I'm SURE Alex will ask: "Yea, ya got a race track up here?"
ALEX PRUETT.........A GREAT YOUNG MAN I'M PROUD TO HAVE KNOWN!!

To the Pruett Family,
I appreciate everything that your family and Alex did for my family when our child was sick. If there is anything our family can do for you just let us know. I still am having problems beleaving that this could happen to Alex. I know he was young and healthy in the past. I was not aware of his health. I remember racing down in Barona California with Alex and him and I running wheel to wheel and everything at the end of the nite just one big tailgate party. I will cherish those memories. God Bless Alex and your family.

Very sorry to hear this news. Alex was one of the nicest kid I've run into and I was looking to seeing him race for years to come. I always looked forward to visiting his pits before the races. I have some pictures that I will post of Alex in sprints. Also him in midget before Turkey Night Grand Prix in 2006.

Steve, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. The last time I saw Alex was at the 2005 Chili Bowl. He came walking over to me and I thought what the hecks with the cane, then I heard the story about the Gimp, he was still smiling and having a good time. Alex was a cool kid, he will be missed.
God Bless Alex, You and Your Family

The service today was one of a kind, just like Alex. Standing room only with twice the number of people the room usually holds. His uniform and helmet were on display along with hundreds of pictures, more than half of them involving a race car or go-kart.
There was music, videos of his racing and a lot of stories from friends and family. A real celebration of his life. By far the most diverse crowd I've ever seen at a funeral, a fitting testament to the amount of living Alex packed into 20 years.
I was glad to hear Steven say he wanted to stay involved in racing because so many of his great memories of Alex revolve around our sport. It was a sad, funny and moving experience for a young man who had a unique passion for racing.
