My son texted me this idea. We had a short discussion about it, and I decided to throw it out here to see what the fellow Hosers thought about it.
His idea, when Sammy and Steve hang it up for good, should the World of Outlaws retire numbers 1 and 11? I had never thought about it before, but I like the idea. Granted, they weren't the only ones that made the WoO a success, but for basically the first 30+ years of the WoO, Steve and Sammy were the face of the WoO. We discussed, and agreed, that forms of 1 and 11 could still be used. Kraig Kinser 11k, Jacob Allen 1a, Logan Schuchart 1s, and etc. would be fine, but plain 1 and 11 should be retired from WoO competition.
What's your opinion?

Unfortunately it's not as simple as other sports to retire numbers. Since it is a national sport that has to add letters to the number to identify when traveling or there are duplicates, it's nearly impossible. Do you tell Dale Blaney to put a new number on his car because Sammy's retired and so is his number? The letter game practically ruins number retirement.

Yes you do. As a matter of fact, Dale Blaney was 1B last night and is entered for the Knoxville Nationals as 1B. The Nationals have no duplicate numbers.

For those two guys, YES, YES, and ABSOLUTELY!!! They were not only the pioneers for the series, they are also the LEGENDS of the series. Keep in mind, I'm only saying yes for the WoO series, not the entire sport, that would be silly.????

Did I miss something? Are there retired Nascar numbers? Did you mean NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA? Missed the retirement ceremonies in Nascar though.
As far as numbers being retired, it is not that big of a deal to me. However, if you were going to retire two numbers, those are the two that should be retired.

In NASCAR the teams own the numbers. No I do not think sprint cars need to retire numbers, where do you stop A>J>Foyt an on and on.

Nope, too many great drivers, there wouldn't be any numbers left.

Exactly! There would be no Doug Wolfgang/Howells #4 had One of The Greatest Teams ever, of Don Mack/Howells retired The 4, thus the 4x

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?
