Just now saw this. Holy sh_t, that was wicked. 3400 lb missile flying straight into the fence. Flew almost diagonal from the inside of the track straight into the catch fence. NASCAR dodges another bullet. From what it sounds Dillon and the injured fans will be OK, thank God.

Yep, NASCAR dodged another bullet for sure.   The fence did what it was supposed to do, but I wonder what would happen if Dillon's car had impacted the fence four or five feet higher?    I hope that never happens, but if they were smart they would consider that.    If a car ever hits the fence near the top of it, the fence may not be able to stop it or deflect it.   I think you could definetly wind up with a car in the stands if that ever happens.

That's for sure. If one of these cars ever gets in to the grandstand, I think racing will be changed forever - all racing. I've felt that way ever since Bobby Allison went airborne at Talladega many years ago. It's just amazing to me that a car that heavy can launch into the air like that, but all it seems to take is to get air underneath them at that speed.

Just googled it... wow... wonder what would've happened if he went 'cage first' into the fence instead of 'wheels first' ??  Rhetorical... I don't want to know!

I will not go childish and say NASCRAP or NAPCAR but I will say this:  I used to be a huge fan, have gone to the Inaugural Brickyard and 5 other races.  Ever since the implimentation of the Chase, it has taken the wind out of my sails.  I rarely watch anymore and when I do, it's because I am bored as hell and figure I cannot get worse.  NASCAR has gone to hell, and this garbage of the 'Big One' bores me to tears.  The race is OVER and this happens.  Absolutely ridiculous.  Maybe when NASCAR realizes that people tune in to see the 'Big One', and NOT actual racing, they may change something.  The last true champion will be gone, Kyle Larson is not the phenom everyone thought he would be, including me, there is just no excitement other than to see who Bad Brad will wreck next.  Kyle Busch wins all the Xfinity and Truck races....BORING.......Until then, I'm out, unless I have watched all of my Dance Moms or Big Brother episodes.........and there is nothing left on my DVR....

Have any of you ever read about Tony Renna's fatal practice crash at Indy? Not to sound morbid, but I have always been fascinated by what exactly happened there and the black ops type of secrecy of Renna's crash. What's clear is that most or all of the car ended up in the stands/under the stands. That doesn't even get into what happened to the driver in that crash.

That was a single car crash in which Renna apparently lost control, perhaps due to cold tires or perhaps due to a bird hitting either him or the car itself. If that crash had happened on race day, big-time American racing would have changed forever. It would have been another 1955 Le Mans.

Fifteen years ago (before mandatory head and neck restraints), I think there is a very real possibility the Austin Dillon crash could have had a tragic ending because of how fast the car stopped once it hit the fence poles.

No arguments from me on anyone's points.  Here is a couple more for Nascar to ponder:

1.  Why is every major sport hellbent on late primetime starts?  Do they not care about their future fans?  My kids are in grade school and junior high and love watching sports with me.  But then, any major event comes on TV--Stanley Cup, World Series, NBA Finals (not that I watch anyways) and it starts at or right before my kid's bedtime.  Why on God's green earth did Nascar think it was a good idea to schedule a Sunday night race at 8 eastern when the next day is not a holiday?  I had to go to work in the morning and my kids had to go to bed.  (And yes--I am aware that the race was also delayed due to inclement weather)  Why not start some of these events at a reasonable time so your future fan base can be involved as they grow up?    I know they are looking at prime-time dollars now but they are being penny smart and future dollar dumb.  Ask any 10 year old kid the last time they watched every game of the World Series in its entirety.  Almost none.  The World Series is during the start of the school year and most games don't start until after 8:00 at our house.  Then baseball wonders why the fan base is getting older?   You want a new fan base in Nascar but you put that new fanbase to bed before the race starts?  Get a brain.

2.  Nascar--You had 100,000 empty seats last night.  You have had empty seats at restrictor plate races for the last 10 years.  Kyle Larson's motor goes in the stands 2 years ago.  A few years before that, Carl Edwards almost makes it into the crowd and seriously injures a few fans and now Dillon almost puts his engine into the stands.  Why in the hell is the crowd not being moved up to higher ground?  And what lunatic wants to sit in the middle or end of that front stretch anyways?

3.  This has got to be the most ridiculous form of "racing" on the planet.  What is the purpose of the first 155 laps?  It is like I always say about NBA basketball--Give both teams 80 pts. and put 2 minutes on the clock.  That is all that matters anyways.  You watch a bunch of bullcrap racing just to watch a green white checkers where no one can gain on or pass anyone anyways.  I am glad I went to bed.

4.  More people were talking about the World Cup this morning.  That is where you know you have hit rock bottom.

+1.      I agree with everything said here.

Start a race at 11:42PM! What a joke.

I don't disagree with most of your points. The crowds are obviously way, way off in NASCAR from just a few years ago. But I was actually shocked by how many people were still in the stands for a race that ended at 2:45 on a Monday morning.

Even if NASCAR was still as popular today as it was a decade ago, I think the U.S. women winning the World Cup was still going to get most of the media headlines. I am a casual soccer fan at best, but the interest level has gone sharply upward in this country over the past decade or so. Soccer in this country will never be the NFL in terms of fan interest, but it is certainly on a sharp progession upward.

I got home from spending the day in Chicago with family, saw the DVR still cooking and that the race was still recording.  I went to bed, got up, read the headlines and deleted the race without even watching a damn lap.  Pretty sad how far NASCAR has fallen from my 'things to do list'

Yeah--my soccer "shot" was all in fun.  Smile          I know there are soccer fans out there--I was just trying for some humor from racing fans.  And yes--the World Cup win should be bigger news than that pile of garbage on TV last night.

1. NBC paid $400+ million to broadcast NASCAR and they asked to have the race moved to Sunday night just once in order to get the biggest audience. They know people have other plans on Saturday nights especially when its a holiday like 4th of July.

2. 100,000 of those empty seats were under construction and not available for purchase in the first place. Only about 50,000 seats were available to the public. Those seats looked pretty full.

3. plate racing...that argument will go on forever...no right/wrong answer here

4. The World Cup is terribly boring...but soccer is the most popular sport in the world and the US team won. Of course that will be a bigger story.

Thanks for the clarifications on the seat construction--I was a little baffled by that.

I still think they made a mistake on the decision to go that late on a Sunday night.  If they are going to go Sunday night, go at 5:00 pm.  (and yes-I know it still would have been delayed due to rain this year)   I know the dollars that are involved.  But NBC can just walk away a couple years down the road.  Nascar needs to start thinking about their future and their future fans.   Get the races in front of your future for them to view at all times.  I thought the actual 4th of July was an excellent time to get fans in front of the TV.  Always was in the past if I remember correctly.

As far as the plate racing, I don't ever remember it being this uneventful.  (talking about the last 6-8 years) I remember plate races in the past being at least entertaining to watch.  Seems like all of these changes to cheapen the cars for the owners have cost us good racing.  Espectially when it comes to the aero-push on the cookie cutter tracks but in the plate racing too.

On a side note Cubfan--got free tickets to Friday's game at Wrigley for me and my family.  ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Figures we pick the one game of three that the lowly Marlins beat them and they score 1 run.

I rarely watch a NASCAR race anymore simply because it's boring....and I know many fans agree with that. So....they need to change the stale format and come up with something different that will hold fans interest. How about a format similar to Daytona qualifying. Instead of running a boring 500 mile race, split the feild and run two 100 mile races (or 100 laps depending on track size)  and a 200 mile race to determine the overall winner. By shortiening the entire event  up 100 miles (or laps), an intermission between the second qualifier and the final race gives teams that earned the spot in the final event time to prepare cars as needed. Sounds like a Saturday night at the local races, but sounds better than watching the last 50 or 100 miles of a 500 mile race. As for the cars potentially getting into the stands. Kyle Petty said it best years ago. Quit selling seats so close to the track.

oh no! talk about a snoozer. That was boring even for a pitching duel.

I think 5pm Sunday would of been perfect. Weather still wouldnt of changed anything but I like the idea better. I actually prefer any night racing to be on a Sunday night so I dont have to miss it while i'm at Knoxville. Plus, I can't imagine ratings ever being better on a Saturday night compared to a Sunday evening.

I saw at least one live Nascar race for a period of 22 consecutive years, haven't been to one in 3, and I'm 33 now.  They have dumbed down the cars so bad (they aren't the only ones - indycar, F1, sports car, etc...) in general, the show sucks because everyone can run the same speed.  Daytona has obviously been like that for years, I've been to Daytona and it is exciting in person, but only for the same reason Rambo is exciting, not because they're racing.  My dad and I talked about this yesterday, it's why we went to Lincoln Speedway Thursday night.  410 Sprint cars are the last car left for men, they haven't been dumbed down.  Safety matters, but lets make the cars and tracks safer, NOT SLOWER.

Let me add another one:

5.  Ryan Blaney qualifies fast enough to make the field in the top 15 or so (can't recall exactly where his speed would have landed him) and doesn't make the race due to their stupid qualifying rules.  They have butchered qualifying to the point where any part time or new team has a helluva time just making the race even if they outrun 2/3 of the field.

Was anyone at the Speedweek show this past Friday at Williams Grove? When NAPCAR can come anywhere close to that I might start watching again. If it takes a bad wreck for people to talk about your brand, your brand is probably ruined.
