MICHNOWICZ WINS THIRD CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT MAIN OF 2015!

(Placentia, CA, May 26, 2015)   Parlayed with his win and a flip of his closest pursuer in the championship standings, two-time and defending California Lightning Sprint Car champ Bobby Michnowicz extended his point lead at the Annual Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday night.  The victory was a series leading third of the year for the veteran racer in the first six races of 2015.

Michnowicz started the year with a bang when he won the first two races at El Centro and Bakersfield in March.  However, he had been winless since that time until Saturday night when he steered the T-Shirts by Timeless/Rosson Racing/Pflum & Wagner Racing/Fuel Safe Racing Cells/Keizer Wheels/DLX Chassis/Kawasaki ZX10 #21k to the win.  The Lomita based racer served notice early on that he was the driver to beat when he established a new track record of 17.294 to edge his son Kevin in qualifying on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval.

Heat race winners Jeff Dyer of Fort Irwin and Placentia’s Dan Hillberg started on the front row for the 20-lap main event.  Upland’s Alex Grigoreas, who won the last race before Perris at the Santa Maria Raceway, and San Diego’s Damon Arnett comprised the second row with son and father, Kevin & Bobby Michnowicz, making up row three.

At the drop of starter Kevin Winters’ green flag, Hillberg was the first to turn one with Dyer and Arnett in tow.  Arnett, who finished second in the 2014 championship chase, was making a rare 2015 appearance.  However, that appearance was short lived as he slapped the front straight wall at the end of the first circuit and was done for the night.

Arnett’s mishap was minor compared to what happened on lap four.  With Hillberg still leading, Bobby Michnowicz in second and Dyer third, Grigoreas and Kevin Michnowicz became embroiled in a battle for fourth.  The youngster passed Grigoreas with an inside move in turn one.  Coming off turn two, Grigoreas stayed wide and tried to drive around Michnowicz for fourth, but going into turn three he changed lines and tried to dive inside of him.  Instead of diving inside of him, Grigoreas drove over his left rear tire and executed a bone jarring series of flips that only saw him stop because the crash wall got in the way.  Grigoreas was initially shaken, but eventually walked away from the scene of the crash.  His car suffered extensive damage.  Both he and young Michnowicz were done for the night.

Once Grigoreas car and the debris was cleared from the track, the race continued, but the once big lead Hillberg enjoyed was wiped out by the red.  On the restart the chase was on with Hillberg at the point followed by Bobby Michnowicz and Dyer.  The chase did not last for long.  Michnowicz used the outside line to sweep around Hillberg and take the lead coming off of turn four on lap five.  From that point on the handwriting was on the wall and Michnowicz raced away from his challengers to establish a huge lead.

Michnowicz built up a ¾ of a straightaway lead and he would have maintained that to the checkered, but lapped traffic was looming in front of him late in the race.  Rather than get mixed up with the lappers, he decided to play it safe and backed off at the end, but still won by over a quarter straightaway over Hillberg.  Newly married Dyer finished third with Chino’s Pat Kelley scoring a CLS career best fourth after a long battle with San Bernardino’s James Heling who finished fifth.

By coming from fifth to first, Michnowicz was also the “Hard Charger” in the main event.

Michnowicz now has a whopping 111-point lead over Grigoreas in the championship standings as the season nears the halfway point.  Dyer is third and trails Grigoreas by 17-points.  Hillberg and Heling are fourth and fifth.

After getting this weekend off, the CLS is back on the track for the second of four 2015 appearances at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway on June 6th.  When the series last appeared at the beach side oval April 11th, Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes won the20-lap main.
