Ventured out to Fremont Sunday to see Tony Stewart's All Stars......and it was a good one.

As we pulled into the lower parking lot behind the grandstand, I turned my eyes toward the white painted Pioneer Sugar silos. They always stand tall and upright and their commanding presence always demands a look. They appear to be interested onlookers and you can almost imagine they stretch taller every year.....so they can get a look at the races.

We made the treck up the walkway and through the gate and at the top of the hill we see Parker-Price Miller's t-shirt trailer and to the right Steve Kinser's t-shirt trailer as well.  I haven't seen Steve Kinser race in a long, long time, so this is gonna be interesting for sure. Once inside, we easily get seated at the second row from the top, just between turn 4 and the flag stand. The big and fat water tower, always in view behind turn two, is still there.  The foam safety cushions that line the outside of the turns are all in place. The cars are being pushed off to get heat in the motors. The familiar smell of burning race fuel and cigarettes mix in your nostrils and you brain tells you this is where you want to be!

There are 49 winged sprints and there are alot of guys I want to see race. Kenny Jacobs is here, his new ride is awesome to look at. Guys who are trying the wing out, Hunter Shurenberg, Tracy Hines, and Brady Bacon, Logan Forler, Rico Abreu, Steve Kinser, McFadden, Blaney, Shaffer, etc., etc., wow what a group of cars! 5 fligyts of hot laps on a rough track in 1 and two. Only 1 lap for qualifying and Patrick hooks a rut in turn 1 and turns over a few times. Cars are bouncing through a hole in turn 1 by the infield tire. Then the next guy out, Matt Merrill bounces and digs in the right rear when he landed and bicycles and rolls with great momentum into the turn two fence! Ryan Smith and Broc Martin are quick timers.

The track got a drink of water and then the heats. The track proved to be sticky for some, as many cars were too tight entering into the corners and wanted to hop up the turn. The first heat produced alot of yellows. Chris Andrews breaks the front end and is towed to the pits...by a jeep...with a cool A-arm/winch set up. Much quicker than a tow truck. You can tell this is a sprint car track! Danny Smith flips it in heat 1....by riding over Nate Dussels tire....In heat two, I was watching Steve Kinser. On the opening lap, he exited turn two pulling a wheelie and didn't set it down until the middle of the back straight. He made it to the fourth spot and a transfer, by racing Sheldon Haud hard and then Steve ran up the 4th turn tire and unsettled his car. As he rode out another wheelie, he lost two spots. Steve then stomped the pedal and muscled back around the two guys who passed him....making a bonzai move under Sheldon in turn one to regain the transfer spot. To see that...well that was worth the whole trip for me. That was bringing back a little magic from the past.

After the heats, we saw a good c and b main, with a stacked a-main on deck. As I waited for the A-main, I noticed a guy a few rows below me who was wearing black shades, had greyish hair and looked, wait, he looked just like Steve Kinser...with his shades on. I'm not kidding....he looked alot like Steve. Maybe a relative? It was uncanny.

The A-main was great. Bacon gets the lead, and Smith follows. There's that darn Blaney again in third, but wait!  Blaney    hits that bump and bounces the car back to sixth place. McFadden passes Smith as Smith starts to go backwards. Then he passes Bacon. Then the crowd start to notice that 8th starting Tim Shaffer is creeping on up. Then it's Shaffer creeping up on McFadden. On the long runs, Shaffer gaioned ground and passed McFadden, then a yellow. The track was slick, but not taking rubber yet. Shaffer would bump the backstretch wall and get a moisture patch on his entry to turn three. Shaffer goes low, tip toeing around the tires as McFadden goes high. Finally on the last restart, Shaffer passes McFadden after his tires warmed up and Tim wins it!  So glad for him. This was definately a drivers track tonight. Wilson and Abreu up from the back to 6th and 8th while others, even the fastest timers fell back. Tim, you didn't forget how to drive!  Now, onto Attica, Wayne County and Millstream!

This post reminds me of how Hoseheads MB used to be back in the early days. Just a fan passing on information on a race he went to see. No complaining, just the information. Thanks!
