i'm not sure he said sprint and midgfet drivers couldn't do good at indy. i thought he was just saying that sprints and midgets were so much different than driving an indy car today that there needed to be another stepping stone from those on the way to indy to better help drivers get there vs nascar.
things were different when AJ and Mario were coming up the ranks. the cars were a lot more similar...in fact at one point the cars were basically the same. today the cars are much different and the transition is much different.
to indy and beyond!!

Isn't Eddie Cheever the guy who couldnt make it in formula 1 and never did anything to speak of in Indy either.
Hell he he didn't even last long as a commentator. Haha
it was the Real Men that that came up thru the Sprints and Dirt Champ Cars that made Indy what it once was.
I'm pulling for Clausen

To say he never did anything in Indy car racing is a little far fetched.
He had 5 wins which included an Indy 500 win. The Indy 500 win alone is something more than a few past and current Indy car/CART/IRL drivers have never claimed.....

Yeah that makes him an expert for sure. The Indy 500 is a joke. Hardly worth watching. Nothing but foreigners.

You have to hear the entire context of Clausens qualifying laps. While those words did come out of his mouth you really need to lisen to all of it. They had a good conversation about developing drivers.

I didn't hear the comments but if thats what he said, he couldn't be more spot on. I think that program of giving the usac champ an indylights ride is the way to go, but who is going to pay for it?

cheever is an arrogant asshole, not many like him even in the indy car scene...however he did have a succesful racing career and is entitled to his opinion...i heard it live and it did come off a little irritating but perhaps there is truth in it.. going from dirt to an indy car for one race and expecting significant success is a little too much to ask...by comparison if you take some of the best ashpalt racers and put them in a usac national car or a midget for a couple weekends, they're prob not going to fair too well..

i wasn't trying to say i was quoting him exactly, but i am saying that is what i thought he was trying to say with his comments. he did mention there needed to be a stepping stone to indy vs nascar for sprint and midget drivers and while his comment might be taken to be a bit rough it seemed he was just saying to take todays sprint and midget drivers and try to throw them into indy wasn't going to present the best results. kind of like throwing them directly into the lions den.
to indy and beyond!!

It has always been about who can bring money in the money. But i agree that lately driving ability has taken a back seat to the money.

Let's not fool ourselves.....Cheever (and several others) won watered down 500's right after the IRL/CART split.
