Crockett notches sixth NSCS win at Elma

Andrew Kunas, NSCS Publicist

ELMA, Wash. – For Roger Crockett, winning never gets old.

The Medford driver continued his season-long run as the top driver on the circuit when he captured his series-high sixth Northwest Sprint Challenge Series main event of the season Sunday night at Grays Harbor Raceway. Crockett has won all three NSCS events at the Elma, Wash. clay oval this season.

Crockett, who entered the evening with a 51-point advantage over Puyallup, Wash.'s Mitch Olson, was the last driver to qualify for the six-lap dash race. Luck was on Crockett's side as he was left with the second starting position after the first five drivers all drew their starting positions.

Winning that dash, Crockett earned the pole position for the 30-lap affair and would lead the entire event in the Henderson Motorsports No. 7N Bailey Bros.-powered Eagle. It was a nice turn of events for Crockett as far as the NSCS season goes, as he did not finish last month's Skagit 360 Nationals finale after a part failure.

"It's really nice. We had a really rough Speed Week. We had one win, could've been three," said Crockett, who wasn't phased by some of the company attracted to Sunday's event, which proceeds Monday's World of Outlaws Sprint Series event at the same track.

"It doesn't matter to me who we have here. It's just a bunch of cars and numbers to me."

Crockett was respectfully, though confidently, referring to the presence of a number of World of Outlaws drivers and two more from the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Jason Solwold, Jason Sides and former regular Shane Stewart were representing the World of Outlaws while Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart were racing at the track just one night after racing in the Nextel Cup event in Bristol, Tenn.

Sides, Solwold and Shane Stewart were expected to attend and Kahne and Tony Stewart were surprise entries with some prior rumors, but the biggest surprise of the evening arguably was Jared Peterson, who turned 16 years of age just a month ago. Peterson, who calls Stanwood, Wash. home, started alongside Crockett on the front row and finished second aboard his family's No. 9p Rocket, this coming in his first racing appearance at Grays Harbor.

"The track's fun," Peterson said of his experience. "I didn't expect to run as well as I did. I just wanted to make the feature, but we were able to get in the dash as well. (Still) I learned that Roger was way faster than I was."

Six-time and defending track champion Jay Cole of Shelton, Wash. finished third in his own No. 0J Gaerte-powered Maxim. Tacoma's Shawn Rice, who set fast time in qualifying, finished fourth in the RAM Racing No. 76 Rocket. Shane Stewart, the Bixby, Okla. driver who won three races en route to the NSCS Northwest Speed Week title last month, scored his fifth top-five finish in the six NSCS events he has competed in driving the Mike & Janie Doyle No. 1 Shaver-powered Maxim. Stewart had started the race 15th.

Olson, twice a winner on the tour this season, finished sixth in the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered Rocket. Defending Skagit Speedway champion Steve Kilcup of Sedro-Woolley, Wash. was seventh in the M & S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Eagle.

The No. 33v machine was on a race track for the first time since Henry Van Dam was seriously injured in May's NSCS event at Willamette Speedway in Oregon. Driving Van Dam's car was Solwold, who won a heat race and then finished eighth in the feature after starting 17th. Solwold, who still calls Washington home, won the 1998 championship with the old Northern Sprint Tour.

J.J. Hickle of Quilcene, Wash. finished ninth after starting 19th and British Columbia's Travis Rutz recovered to finish tenth after an earlier accident.

Sides, out of Bartlett, Tenn., was credited with 13th after dropping out in the closing laps after a part failure in his own car. Cory Chamberlain of Coquitlam, Brit. Col. Finished 14th after crashing in his first appearance at Grays Harbor Raceway.

Kahne, who was the runner-up in Bristol the night before, finished second in his heat race and started the A-Main in the 13th position. Kahne, however, was involved in an accident with Glenn Borden Jr. and at least one other car. Damage to his own No. 9 Mopar-powered JEI forced Kahne, from Enumclaw, Wash., to call it an evening. The former NST Rookie of the Year who had won sprint car events at Grays Harbor in the late 1990's was credited with 19th.

On a cool evening, the track retained moisture and stayed fast all night.

"The track was really fast, and it was harder to pass on than it usually is when we have it drier," Crockett said.

Crockett only had to deal with slower traffic a little during the feature, as four cautions and a red flag accident throughout the event kept the track clear in front of Crockett most of the time. The caution for Sides on lap 28 cleared the track one more time for Crockett, who motored away with the victory.

Olson won the 15-lap B-Main race and as a result of finishing in the top two Olson received his time back and got to start seventh behind the dash cars. Everett's Rick Fauver, who came out of retirement to race for Scott Pierce this weekend, finished second and also got his time back, starting eighth. Fauver, however, had problems at the start of the feature and did not complete a lap. Hickle and Borden tagged the back of the A-Main field after finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Tony Stewart was racing at Grays Harbor Raceway for the first time and in the state of Washington for only the second time (his first was at Skagit last year). Stewart stopped during his heat race, reportedly having motor problems. Stewart returned to finish ninth, but had to race in the B-Main, where Stewart would finish eighth. The two-time Nextel Cup champion out of Indiana was offered a provisional starting spot for the A-Main, but Stewart declined, believing he did not earn it.

Third place points man Billy Nutter of Central Point, Ore. finished tenth in the B-Main after surviving a number of accidents. It was only the first time this season Nutter failed to make an NSCS feature race. Crockett and Olson are the only two drivers who have made all 13 NSCS A-Mains.

Crockett's win in the dash, featuring the six fastest qualifiers who transferred out of their heat races, came over Peterson, Cole, Rice, Rutz and John Farrell. Robbie Vaughn, the top rookie in the point standings, won the eight-lap C-Main event before finishing 18th in the B-Main.

Idaho's Chris Adams won the first heat race over Rice and Rutz. Shane Stewart bested Evan Funk and Crockett in heat two and it was Brad Holmes, a Grays Harbor Raceway regular, who held off Kahne and Kilcup to win the third heat race. Solwold's win in heat four came over Sides and Farrell, who finished 12th in the A-Main.

Rice's time that was tops in the 42-car field was a 12.393 seconds around the 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval, averaging 108.932 miles per hour in speed on that lap. Olson, Nick Engberg, Tayler Malsam and Nutter followed in the results. Peterson was sixth with Cole, Farrell, Rutz and Crockett rounding out the top ten. Kahne and Tony Stewart were 19th and 20th, respectively.

The NSCS has two more nights of racing at Grays Harbor Raceway this season. The Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge, rained out in July, has been re-scheduled for September 14 and 15 and will pay $10,092 to win. The next events on the NSCS schedule are September 7 at Willamette Speedway and September 8 at Cottage Grove Speedway, the final events in Oregon for the NSCS this season. The series closes its season out with the traditional two-day show during the Central Washington State Fair in Yakima on September 28 and 29.
