Why anything relating to a NASCAR star on a sprint car website?  Because Jeff Gordon cut his teeth in open wheel racing.  His family relocated to Indiana from California because he could race in Indiana at a younger age and because there were more racing opportunities.

I first saw Gordon race in a sprint car race at the now defunct Mesa Marin Raceway near Bakersfield, CA in December of 1990 or 1991.  Gordon was driving for his stepfather John Bickford and Won the race.

Without the current "Chase" system, Gordon would be going for his eighth "Cup" championship this coming season.  As it is he already has four championships and 92 "Cup" wins -- behind only Petty and Pearson.

He's been a great ambassador for the sport and a true gentleman throughout his NASCAR career.

I am an above the knee amputee and proudly sport a prosthesis socket that has Gordon material laminated into it as well as a bright yellow #24.

Although the sport will miss him there are lots of young, upcoming drivers who will eventually fill the gap left by Gordon's retirement.

It's refreshing to see him retiring at the top of his game unlike so many athletes (race drivers included) who have carried on long past their prime.
