Two Barrel Carbureted Spec Sprints (with starter) are also welcome to compete and can use their track legal Hoosier tires. Cockpit adjustable shocks are NOT allowed and engine restrictor rules are 1-7/8” with open heads and 2-3/16” with ASCS Spec legal cylinder heads. The weight rule is 1,475 lbs. with driver and one-way radios are mandatory. There is a $35 entry fee to all competitors and the USAC Western Classic Sprint Car Rule Book can be found online at www.usacracing.com.

Heading to Marysville, Ryan Bernal of Hollister, California has a twenty-six point advantage over the competition. Driving Mike Phulps’ #56 Tri-C Mandarin Ranch / Core Power ART, Bernal has won three of the six races in the campaign, tying Kyle Hirst’s 2012 series record for most wins in a season. At Chowchilla on August 9th, the defending champion scored a fourteenth place finish after an early exit. To date, Ryan also has two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one heat race victory, five top-10 finishes, and 43 feature laps led to his credit. Bernal will be looking to continue his championship bid by claiming his 8th career USAC Western Classic triumph.

Yorba Linda, California’s Matt Mitchell is second in the USAC Western Classic Sprint point chase. Piloting his #37 Campbell Bros. Storage / Pit Boss Maxim, Mitchell ran fourth at Chowchilla after winning the night before at Watsonville. Entering Saturday’s show, the USAC/CRA standout has one heat race victory, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, six top-10 finishes, and one feature lap led on the season. At press time, Matt is recently engaged and might miss Saturday’s race at Marysville.

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach, California sits third in the WCRS point standings. Since winning the 30-lap feature at Chowchilla on August 9th, the former USAC Western Midget Champion has parted ways with the JFM team. With two feature wins, two heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 47 feature laps led to his credit, Nic still has a mathematical chance at the championship. As this writing goes to press, it is unknown if Faas has a ride for Saturday’s debut at MRP.

After taking fifth at Chowchilla, Visalia, California’s Richard Vander Weerd has climbed to fourth in the standings. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Works Maxim, the 2011 USAC West Coast Champion has two heat race victories, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, and four top-10 finishes in the campaign. Richard will have his sights on adding Marysville Raceway Park to his win list and earning the $1,500 payday.

Jace Vander Weerd of Visalia, California is fifth in the championship points. Driving the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Works Maxim, the 2010 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year raced to sixth at Chowchilla Raceway after starting ninth. With five top-10 finishes on the season, Jace will be looking to add the winning trophy to his collection by earning his first Western Classic victory.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Marty Hawkins, Austin Liggett, D.J. Johnson, Marty “Shifter” Landon Hurst, Scott Hall, “The Human Highlight Reel” Geoff Ensign, Jeff Sibley, Jim Richardson, Kevin Barnes, Max Adams, and more.

Currently twelfth in the standings, Stockton, California’s Trevor Schmid leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Connor Kassik, Scotty Dupont and Johnny White are also in contention.
