Alex DeCamp Is Victorious @ Oklahoma Open Wheel Thunder Nationals

Salina Oklahoma (August 16, 2014)- Every driver envisions being in the midst of a hot streak and for Claremore Oklahoma’s Alex DeCamp, this is his time. DeCamp won his fourth Oil Capital Racing Series sprint car A Feature of 2014 tonight at the fabulous Salina Highbanks Speedway in an event billed as the inaugural running of the ‘Oklahoma Open Wheel Thunder Nationals’ featuring OCRS and ASCS sprint cars and non-sanctioned midgets. It was also DeCamp’s second straight win at the Highbanks.

Shayla Waddell led the boys to green in the 25-lap affair but it was outside front row starter Nigel Calvert busting into the lead as the field roared into turn one with Waddell tucking in behind Calvert. A red flag would quickly ensue as Blake Edwards would not see turn three as he flipped coming out of the second turn. Edwards would walk away uninjured and the field would regroup for a complete restart.

Calvert would once again charge into the lead at the start and this time Casey Wills would move into the second spot with Waddell third as the field raced down the backstretch. Andrew Deal would sweep by Waddell for third in turns three and four before the completion of the opening lap.

DeCamp started fifth in his Whitney Mfg / Morton Excavating / STK Racing Engines / Eagle chassis and was immediately looking to dispose of cars ahead was in the process of placing a slide job move on Wills when Deal spun on lap three in turn four necessitating a yellow flag. Deal would rejoin the field at the rear of the pack.

DeCamp would get by Wills in turn four on the restart and Wills fought back on the front straight but it was DeCamp at the line by a wheel for the position. DeCamp would then catch Calvert in turn four the next time around and like with Wills, he would be ahead by only a wheel at the flagstand but this time, it was to take the lead. However, Waddell and Fred Mattox would get together in turn four causing a yellow thus DeCamp’s move for the lead would be negated.

The lap five restart would have Calvert on the point with DeCamp, Wills, Brian McClelland and Johnny Kent as the top five runners. DeCamp wasted no time in becoming the one who would be hunted as he would take the lead from Calvert on the restart. McClelland would move around Wills for the third spot shortly after in the American Bacterial Solutions / Precisions Coatings / XXX chassis. McClelland would then take second from Calvert and set sails for DeCamp. As the front runners were fighting for position, Shane Sellers, who started in the fifth row, was starting to enter the top five.

On lap ten, Brett Wilson, who was making his OCRS debut, spun in turn four and the track would go yellow. Sellers would attempt a slide job in turn four on the restarted lap to over take OCRS points leader Danny Smith and Wills. Sellers cleared Smith but made contact with Wills sending him into the turn four wall. The next restart order would see DeCamp, McClelland, Kent, Smith, Sellers Glen Passmore and Deal, who was working his way back from his earlier spin.

Sellers would then use the Checkered Flag Trucking / Courtney Farms / Brand Engines Maxim to pass Smith on the next restart and a couple of laps thereafter, Smith would take a position from Kent on the backstretch only to have Deal pass him shortly after. DeCamp and McClelland would then begin to maneuver through lapped traffic on the 18th lap. Deal continued his charge as he took a spot from Kent a lap later for the fourth spot.

The leaders used a combination of slide jobs to work past the lapped traffic that was just ahead. Once the lapped cars were cleared, DeCamp had a three car length lead on McClelland for the last two laps and the margin of victory stayed the same with Sellers another 3 lengths behind McClelland in third. Deal and Kent rounded out the top five. Smith would finish sixth, with Passmore earning the events AmeriFlex Hose and Accessories Hard Charger award by moving to seventh from fifteenth. Mickey Walker was eighth, Kyle Clark ninth and Cameron Hagin rounded out the top ten.
