NCRA Modified Drivers Set to Battle Hutch, Point Lead!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – July 23, 2014 - It will be a battle within a battle this weekend as the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products modified division will make their annual trip to the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas this coming Friday and Saturday night as Mel Hambelton Ford presents the 58th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Hutchinson Grand Nationals.

Nebraska’s Jon Thompson and defending tour champion Marc Hurd are currently tied atop the point standings heading into this traditional weekend appearance atop the famed half mile oval. Not to be left out are Kirby Robe and Dan Powers with Robe just ten points out of the point lead and Powers just 40. Jason McGehee is still within striking distance (-105) while current touring rookie of the year leader Chris Pitts is currently sixth in the standings.

Those drivers as well as close to forty others from a three state area will all be competing to not only etch their names in the Hutch Nationals record books but also the $2000 top prize on Championship Saturday night. Only NCRA rules will be utilized for this event.

Despite being winless for years, former five-time tour champion Brian Franz of Halstad, Kansas found it easier to repeat after getting his first Hutch Nationals championship. His first came back in 2011 and once he got the monkey off his back, he picked up his second championship just last year. Tanner Mullens (2012), Hurd (2008. 2010) and Brent Burkhart (2009) are the most recent victors while Troy Gemmill picked up the win back in 2007.

This year has the chance to see three-generation family garner Hutchinson Grand Nationals championships while Van Gemmill won in 1993 with Troy picking up the victory in 2007 as mentioned. Troy’s son Brendon has announced his intentions on competing in this traditional two day event and will look to etch the Gemmill name in the record books.

To date, 89 different drivers from five states have competed in at least one event during the 2014 race season.

The format for the NCRA modified division this weekend is as follows:

Friday night – Every car will draw for heat race with the top fifteen in passing points going to the night’s “A” feature. The top six finishers will be locked in heads up for the championship feature on Saturday night.

Saturday night – Cars that finished 7-15 in Friday night’s feature will be lined up for the front spots of two (2) dashes (7th on pole of first dash, 8th on pole of second dash, 9th on outside of first dash, tenth on outside of second dash, etc.) with the remainder six (6) spots in each dash will be filled by the cars finishing 16th and below in passing points from Friday night to make the fifteen car dashes. The top six from each dash will go to the Championship feature.

Cars that finish seventh through fifteenth will fill the top spots of two (2) last chance races. The remainder of the cars from passing points will be added to the back of the field. The top three from each race will advance and round out the 24 car championship field on Saturday night.

With this new format, each car entered on Friday will have three chances to get into the Championship “A” feature on Saturday night. If you choose to come Saturday only you will have only one (1) chance to make the “A” feature and the best starting spot would be nineteenth. Also, each car transferring from all dashes and last chance races will pay money, no transfer – no money.

If any modified driver can win Friday night’s dash as well as Saturday night’s championship feature, that driver could take home $3000 for his weekend’s efforts. Any modified driver winning Friday night’s dash and Saturday night’s championship feature would take home $2000 for their weekend sweep.

At the conclusion of Friday night’s events atop the famed half mile oval, the band “Linnaberry Wine” will be performing.

Championship Saturday night will see over 100 bicycles given away to ages ten and under so there will be something for not only racers but fans as well as anticipation mounts for the 28th annual Hutchinson Grand Nationals.

Gates both nights will open at 5:00 PM with racing slated for a 7:00 PM start time both nights.
