Wednesdays with Wayne – Podium Finish at Knoxville/Canada Trip!

(Bill W) July 23, 2014 – A welcome podium finish came at the Knoxville Raceway in 410 action Saturday for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team.  It came at a good time, as it will be their last prep for the Nationals.  This week finds them “North of the Border” in Canada for four events, two of which will be World of Outlaws shows.

Last Wednesday the JSTS Speedweek opener saw the team at Sioux Speedway in Sioux Center, Iowa.  Wayne would come from the back of his heat to run third.  He led much of the feature.  “I really felt we had the car the win,” he says.  “I think we led eleven laps.  We had a red, and then we broke a lower shaft in the rear-end.  By then though, (Brian) Brown and Cole Wood had passed me, so I was already in trouble.  But they were both on ‘D’ tires, and I was on the ‘H’.  I’m not switching from it.  I’m sticking with them, because I need to figure them out and we’ll all be on them soon.”

The Knoxville, Iowa driver towed to Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa on Thursday.  After winning his heat, he lined up fifth for the feature.  “We weren’t that good at Rock Rapids,” says Wayne.  “We were a fifth place car there for sure.”

On Friday at Fairmont Raceway in Minnesota, he would run second in his heat and line up sixth in the feature.  “I felt really good at Fairmont,” says Wayne.  “We were really good in the heat.  We didn’t tighten up that much for the feature, but the little bit we did made us horrible (finishing 14th). It laid rubber, but that isn’t what messed us up.  We just didn’t have the car set up.”

On Saturday, the team pulled double duty in the 360 and 410 classes at Knoxville.  In the 360 class, Wayne would win his heat, but pull off in the feature.  “I think we tried to do a little too much with two cars,” he says.  “We did alright with the 410.  I think we qualified 11th quick, and we were able to get out of the heat.”

The invert for the feature saw Wayne start on the pole of the 410 event.  “I just didn’t find the racetrack quick enough,” he says.  “In the 360 race, it seemed like the bottom was the place to be.  I just stuck with it a little too long.  We finally had a racecar that I could drive though.  Lately, it’s felt like I’ve been on a County Fair ride…along for the ride.”

Wayne would come home third in the stoutest field assembled yet this year at Knoxville.  “Clean air makes a big difference,” he says.  “I feel a little bad for my guys.  We finally get to start on the front row, and we can’t get the win.  That’s kind of how our year’s been, but we were right there and finished third in a tough field of 410’s.”

Three of the team’s four races this week will be at Ohsweken Speedway in Ohsweken, Ontario.  The other will be Sunday’s visit by the WoO to Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ontario. “We’ll be racing Friday night with the 360 at Ohsweken,” says Wayne.  “We’ll race Sunday at Cornwall with the Outlaws, then it’s back to Ohsweken for their big 360 show Monday night, followed by the Outlaws on Tuesday.”
