Only  five one hundredths of  a second kept Geoff Ensign from a clean sweep on opening night of the PitStopUSA Sprint Car Series last Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway. Driving the Brett and Sherry Lay owned Les Schwab Tire, D&F Auto Body, Rod Buntjer Bail Bonds, Rapid Rooter, Konnected Clothing #24b, the 24 year old “Human Highlight Reel” drove off into the a night which could only be described as dominating.

Fastest in hotlaps, and the only car to go sub 13 seconds during them, a scary looking billow of smoke from under the car was about the only setback Ensign would have all night long caused by an overfilled oil reservoir.

Qualifying 3rd, just .050 off of the top spot, Ensign started 4th in his heat race. Ensign would pass the leader on lap 5 of the 8 lap race and go on to win and punch his ticket to the A Main Event’s front three rows, which would be determined by a random pill draw as time was a factor this night.

Ensign drew a 4, and started outside second row. Within one lap, Ensign had designs on the lead, and made the pass on lap two. A momentary bobble in turns 1 and 2 cost Ensign the lead, but only temporarily, as he would power back into the lead within a lap. As the laps wore on, only yellows would slow Ensign’s drive to the checkers, and in the end, the clocks showed 4.8 seconds as the margin of victory.

The win is Ensign’s 3rd in 2014, and 31st overall. “What a car tonight. It’s awesome to drive a car like this, and I’m sure the pits are going to be pretty fun when I get out.” Ensign would say as he got out of the car. “Brett’s (car owner Lay) only desire is to make this car as fast as possible. He spent a ton of money in the offseason, and it’s my job to make it look like money well invested. Hopefully, a win and a 2nd in two races so far is good enough for him at this point.” Ensign said with a smile.

Next up for Ensign, as he’s juggling his schedule, is a possible trip to Chico or Watsonville this Friday night, followed by Round #2 of the PitStopUSA Sprint Car Series back at Petaluma Speedway on Saturday. Stay tuned to his Twitter feed @ensignmotorspts for updates.
