Good day all,
I am looking for some info on must-see tracks/races in California from July 26th to Aug.6th 2014. I recently posted this same question regarding the PA Posse, unfortunately (and fortunately) the feedback I received made me change my mind about heading out there this year so my wife and I have decided to try your end of the country for some hopefully unforgettable racing. I am looking for any and all input, as nobody knows the area and racing quality better than those who attend, and this forum has already helped me in decision-making in the past. I have a preference for winged sprints on bullring type tracks (love the traffic/passing aspect) but I am open to just plain great sprint car racing. Looks like we'll be flying into LA and then are open to travelling up to San Fran area to catch something wherever we can. Anything that is do-able driving-wise ie: thurs/fri/sat shows at different tracks is an option, as long as we're not talking half a days drive.
I was able to catch a local race at Ventura two summers ago, and absolutely loved the track and its beautiful surroundings, so I know there wil be some great stuff to see this summer.
Looking forward to hearing your replies
Cheers

My schedule shows the KWS at Antioch Saturday 7/26 and the following Saturday 8/2 at Stockton. I'd suggest Ocean Speedways Friday show on 8/1 but the Taco Bravo series isn't scheduled there on that Friday.

From what i can gather the KWS series is one of the better ones in the area, correct? What kind of car counts do they generate?
If given the choice to move my holidays forward a week, would it be better to catch the KWS at Placerville on 07/19 then at Antioch on 07/26 (possibly opening up another night/track during that time also) or keep it the same at Antioch 07/26 then Stockton 08/02?
Thoughts?

California is a lot bigger than Pennsylvania. Don't know where these tracks are, but it could be a lot more driving.
Why not Knoxville or Belleville, KS (midget championship)?

Its a compromise situation, and with PA out of the picture California is a great option as far as my wife is concerned as there is lots to see/do while we can sneak in a couple (3 or 4 ?!?!) races and still have her feel like it is a vacation. From everything i've heard about Knoxville, it is truly a week long event and I wouldnt want to sell myself short, so thats a future plan.....baby steps!

if you moved you week up like you said you could get the kws at placerville on 7-19 the taco bravo 360 show in watsonville on 7-25 and the kws at antioch on 7-26.
i don't know that there are any mid-week shows going on then.
i don't know where you might be staying but placerville is about 2 1/2 hrs from san jose. antioch is a bout an hr and ocean speedway in watsonville is about an hr.
placerville is a good place to see 410 cars. antioch is good to but stockton is getting to be good as well and is a heck of a better facility. the taco bravo 360 shows are always good and some of the 410 guys run it with their 360 cars.
to indy and beyond!!

I used to live in Northern California for 6 years and its hands down the best place to watch wing sprint car racing in the country. I have lived in New Jersey (near PA), Indiana and 4 other states and you cant beat the bullrings of NorCal. Plus, there is tons to do during the week in San Fran, Santa Cruz, Wine Country, Monterey....... and so, so many more place to visit.
Placerville is a must see track. It's a high banked, tight 1/4 mile. The grandstand only holds 2,000 or so and it's right on top of the track. You have to get there by qualfying or you will not get a seat. They have a very passionte fan base. The King of the West series puts on a great show and has the top names on west coast. Check out some youtube videos to see what I mean.
Ocean Speedway has some of the best racing in the area (IMO) as the track is nice and wide and perfect for sprints. Even though its a 360 show, over half the field will be 410 drivers and many of the King of the West drivers support this series/track. Plus, you can spend the day in Santa Cruz. Bring a jacket, it gets cold when the sun goes down.
Antoich is not in the best area and a little rundown but the KWS 410's always put on a great show. Another place that will be packed before qualfying so get there early. The plus of this track is you will be very close to San Fran so another great place to spend the day.
I haven't been to Stockon Speedway as it's only been open a few years but the video I have seen looks like a very racy track.
Silver Dollar Speedway runs a weekly 410 class on Friday nights but it's a little far from San Fran (vs. these other tracks) and the car count could be below 20.
My reco is the Ocean/Placeville weekend on July 18th/19th and then Ocean/Antioch on July 25th/26th. You will see all the top drivers in both 360 & 410 at these shows. All races should have 24 to 30+ cars.

Awesome replies!
That is exactly the kind of info I'm interested in getting. I really appreciate that you have included some time distances and potentially sketchy areas too as its always good to have a heads up as an "outsider".
If you guys (meaning guys & gals) or anybody else has any other ideas/opinions on either the racing/tracks or if you have things you would consider a must see/do in the area then I'm all ears!
Looking forward to reading more from you all
Cheers

By all means move your trip up a week. Placerville, Ocean and Antioch are great examples of Cali hooked up bullrings and Stockton ain't no joke either!

No worries my friend!
As far as Cali goes, I'm well aware of the beauty-weather & scenery as I have a brother living in LA (he's reminding me all the time lol!), its the racing info I was in much need of so a big shout out to all of you as you have been FANtastic with your replies!
As I mentioned earlier I am all about entertaining any and all ideas from anyone out there regarding what else we might be able to squeeze in, both racing and sightseeing-wise.
I'll keep checking back but right now it looks like my focus is on moving my holidays up a week....damn, the excitement and anticipation is killing me already! (this is normal when it comes to sprints, right?!?)
Cheers

Keep in mind the travel times so you dont end up late to the races.
From LA its approx a 5 hour drive to Watsonville's Ocean Speedway. I recommend going highway 101 rather than the dreaded central valley route. It'll take a little longer but by far a much more scenic drive, your wife will thank you for. The track food at Ocean Speedway is really good so you may want to just grab some food there.
Placerville is a must for tailgating early or else you'll miss the line for getting in the gate early and then you'll end up sitting on the front row, not advisable. Great track so do make plans for it. It will most likely be hotter than hell so be prepared.
From Watsonville its about 3 and a 1/4 hour drive to Placerville Speedway.
Cheers!

If you go to Placerville then you're also only about an hour and twenty minutes from Lake Tahoe! My favorite place in Ca.

Watsonville is a coastal town and real close to Monterey and Carmel if you or your wife are so inclined. good way to spend the day doing some wife-friendly things during the day ahead of the Friday night races. For a little more stripped down beach experience, head out of Watsonville to Manresa or Sunset state beaches. Heading a little bit north on highway 1 there's Capitola and Santa Cruz beach & boardwalk.
from the racing side, the feedback youve gotten this far is spot on...ocean/Watsonville, Placerville, Antioch will give you some good shows

When in Stockton, if you see a street sign that says "Hammer Lane," TURN AROUND IMMEDIATELY.
