Valentine and Woodke.  Woodke and Valentine.  For over 40 years, the names of these car owners were found at the top of the point standings and on the podium of many of the biggest races in Jackson Speedway history.  It all began back in 1979 with the Valentine #32.  Wheeled by ace chauffer and Jackson resident Marv Dewall, the Dick Valentine #32 sprinter was the champion of the first Jackson Nationals.  DeWall had partnered with Valentine and his black #32 that year to take on many of the best drivers in the upper Midwest.  Racing primarily Saturday’s at Jackson, the team also went on the road to capture victories throughout the region

Right behind the Valentine #32 sat the famed Loren Woodke 1W.  After the first Nationals, Woodke turned to Jack McCorkell as his driver and set out for revenge.  Jack, whose son Jon is now the Jackson Speedway promoter, was simply dominant and won the next two Jackson Nationals, providing Woodke with the first pair of Nationals trophies in a career that was capped by Tim Monson’s victory in the 2001 Nationals.

Throughout the years, these two car owners and engine builders were consistently up front and battled.  The rivalry was often fun, fierce and feisty all at the same time.  “My dad loved to win, especially the big races” said Greg Valentine.  “Winning the first Jackson Nationals was really important to him, and just as important was to beat the Woodke car.  He hated seeing Loren win the second and third Nationals, but he also was the first to admit it made him better.”

With the 35th Jackson Nationals around the corner, the Jackson Speedway is excited to honor these two legends.  On Friday night, the Pizza Ranch presents the 4th annual Woodke Memorial is being held.  The unique event will pit the top 2 in points from the Jackson Speedway and Knoxville Raceway as well as the top 2 in points from the ASCS National and Midwest Series is a special 14 lap shootout to decide who is the best in the upper Midwest.

Drivers expected for the first Woodke Challenge Cup are:

Jackson Speedway:

Skylar Prochaska, Lakefield, MN, Prochaska 35-The defending Jackson Nationals champion and Jackson Speedway champion will lead the home team as they attempt to keep the Cup in Jackson.

Troy Manteufel, St Peter, MN, Manteufel 5W-The surprise 2nd in Jackson Speedway points has been the model of consistency this year with top 10 finishes in every weekly point’s event.

Knoxville Raceway

Clint Garner, Sioux Falls, SD, Fluth 40-Garner is the 4 time and defending Knoxville Raceway champion.  The former Steve Kinser crew member had 6 wins at the Iowa oval this year.

Joe Beaver,  Knoxville, IA, Beaver #53-Beaver has consistently been one of the top racers at Knoxville over the past 8 years and has competed multiple times at the Jackson Speedway.

ASCS National Series

Johnny “Hollywood” Herrera,  Albuquerque, NM, Print Place #45-The former World of Outlaws racer is very familiar with Jackson from driving the Forbrook #5 during the late 90’s.  Herrera has 21 top 10 finishes this year in ASCS National competition.

Jason “Ragin Cajun” Johnson, Eunice, Louisiana, Stenhouse #41-With over 180 career victories, the defending Lucas Oil ASCS champion will bring his Rousch Yates Ford back to Jackson Speedway.  Jason was the 2009 Jackson Nationals champion and competed earlier this year at the Spring Nationals.

ASCS Midwest Series

Derrik Lusk, Jackson, MN Lusk 93-Lusk claimed the final entry spot with for the Midwest region after being a consistent up front runner all year.

On Saturday, the first annual Valentine memorial race will be held as part of the Jackson Nationals championship night presented by State Bank of Fairmont.  Honoring Dick Valentine, it will be a special event to give back to the racers.  The Valentine memorial race will provide the top 8 drivers who do not qualify for the Nationals A-Main a chance to take home a trophy and extra cash.  “My dad always believed in helping out the little guy who was trying to make it” said Greg Valentine “There were so many times where I remember him giving guys a front axle or nose wing to help them get back on the track after a tough crash.  I think he will be smiling down on Saturday night knowing that we are trying walk in his footsteps by providing some of the less fortunate racers at the Jackson Nationals a chance to go home with a little extra cash”.  In addition, both Brian Woodke and Greg Valentine intend to field cars for this year’s Nationals.  Once again, the 32 and 1W could go head to head for the championship, just as they did 35 years ago.

To be part of the historic weekend, Jackson Speedway and AtoZ Promotions is offering a special advanced purchase only 2 day pass for $40.  Individual night tickets are also on sale at www.jacksonspeeway.com or by calling 612-501-9750.
