After 41 years, the ZEPHYR TRANSFER SUPERMODIFIED from Kansas, re-emerges from it's obscurity. It will be on display this Sunday at Pole Position in it's current state. Time has not been kind to it, but it is much more complete than most cars from the era.

THIS IS THE CAR THAT WON THE NIGHT LEEP AND COX HAD THE BIG FIGHT IN 1969, at OkC Fairgrounds.

This car will be on display this SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, 2013 AT POLE POSITION, in OKLAHOMA CITY. Viewing will be from 2pm -?

Time has not been kind to the car like many from the era, but it is very complete, and for sale at the right price.

This car was a well known Kansas super that was driven by several Legends like Jim Harkness, Roy Bryant . It won the A feature the very night Cox and Leep had a huge fight at OkC in 1969. It became a 6 cylinder car around 1971 and we think it won the 6 cylinder A main at the 1971 Enid Winternationals driven/owned by Doc Hill.

The car eventually made it's way into Lawton OK, then wa kept for many years by DJ Rhode.

The chassis is by Jelly I think

The price is FIRM at $5000 The only reason it will be sold is because I have a chance of buying a complete Nance car. This is not a pile of junk. It is complete so you won't be searching for parts. Can be easely restored. Thanks Trammel 405 262-6721

DJ ran the car up to about 1988 or so at Lawton Speedway with the car when they were still running non wing 100" Modifieds there, I sold him a steel wheel back then that he wanted to have for a spare.

In between it's time in Ks. in the early 70's, it was bought by Dr. Jim Hill from Carnegie, Ok. and he ran it in 6 Cyl. Modified class at Lawton and then it went to Lawton and Bill Tuttweiler #66 had it and ran it as a 6 Cyl. Modified at Lawton in the mid 70's and then he sold it to Frank Headley ran it as #6 as a V8 Super Modified in the late 70's at Lawton , guess it sat through the Champ Dirt Car Days at Lawton in the 80's and then DJ Rhode got it out and ran it in the late 80's a year or so at Lawton, Don't think DJ did much to the car as it looked like that when Frank Headley had it.

I took off the side panels and was suprised at how good the car was. It was the first space frame Jelly built. The lower frame rails are double tubed. I cleaned up a lof of the bad welding and it looks good. I don't think anyone had a grinder back then. It needs a new home. This car has lots of early History on Kansas and Oklahoma. It won it's share of races against a lot of heavy hitter's Later Trammel

Trammel,
Kind of curious and wondering if you can tell us the info??, where was the car located and did DJ Rhode still own it??
You may not want to or can tell us but was just curious if you can??

Ol Car made a bunch of laps at Lawton Speedway and had a long ol lifespan off and on from the early 70's up till the end of the 80's.

Tough ol car for sure ,heck it might have ran longer than some of those regurjated 100" cars that come from Super Modifieds and Champ Dirt Cars and reran as Super Modifieds again in the 90's as well as V8 100" Modifieds into the late 90's and most of those can't be ID'd on where their origination is from.

That is something that DJ had it since the late 80's.

Be nice to see someone restore it give the car some new recognition, sure been around a long time.

My guess is this car was new for the 1970 season? Roy Bryant was the driver. I believe Jim Harkness also drove this car in 1970?

Hard to say.

Jerry Stone stated there actually were 2 maybe 3 cars owned by the original owner of the Transfer car. Question was, which one this was. Jerry stated that a lot had been changed, and it was a long time ago. He could neither prove or disprove that it was a Zephyr car.

Jerry had run one of the Transfer cars into a guard rail at OkC and busted the fuel tank and burned it up pretty good in around 1971 or 1972.

We do not know if this is that very car. BUT, what if--what if, DOC Hill bought/aquired the remains of the car that burned, and brought it back as his own car? Wouldn't be the first time it happened.

Question is, WHAT FITS WHAT IN THE TIMELINE?..............hard to say for now.

NOW THEN ---Jim (Doc) Hill (formerly of Carnegie, OK) , now a retired plastic surgeon in OkC somewhere, ended up owning this car on this page. It is beleived he won the 6 Cylinder race at the Enid Winternats , with this car , in those years. During that very show, Terry Doss was up against Billy Patton and the argument was whether Terry or Billy would win. HILL ended up besting both , and meanwhile a few Kansas fans were upset that a nice Kansas car such as Doc's, was demoted to a 6 banger class. Somewhere around my stash, is an old Enid program stating that Hill had won that very race, and the picture shows this car after he got it back on track.

Yet my Dad says Hill did not drive this car at that very show, even though by this time Hill owned several 100" modifieds.

We need Doc Hill to come in and settle all this if we can. He lives in Edmond now, retired, it is believed. From what I can tell, he is not on facebook, nor listed in the white pages. It will take a friend to find him.

Wallace Collins perhaps? I'll check if I can.

Look at the top picture. Now look at the aluminum panel below the headers. It is cut out. Look at the same panel on the no. 6 car' looks like the same to me. I would be verry suprised if there were two cars built the same with the same panels. Also the crash bars has 4 mounting places on the sides.

Brian,

Wondering if your dad is confusing Don & Jim Hill?

Just remembering the car and seeing it upclose back in the late 80's and seeing the pics now, it's gonna need a lot of attention.

This will clear up a lot of questions> Jerry Stone must have been in another car when he crashed and burned a Zephyr super down.

Hill bought the car at the end of 1971.

Thanks to Mike Monatoboy for clearing all this up.
