BUD KAEDING WINS JIM TURNER MEMORIAL WITH LAST LAP PASS
By Lance Jennings

HANFORD, CA - SEPTEMBER 9, 2012... In one of the most action packed main events in the history of the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series, Campbell's Bud Kaeding emerged with the "Jim Turner Memorial" victory. The $1,500 triumph at Hanford's Kings Speedway marked the tenth career series win for the veteran driver and fourth of the 2012 campaign. Fast time qualifier Ryan Bernal, Rusty Carlile, Austin Liggett, and Justyne Hamblin rounded out the top five drivers in the 30-lap feature.

With a six pill drawn for the main event inversion, rookie contender Austin Liggett shared the front row with Don Gansen. As the field roared through the south turns, third starting Markus Niemela powered to the lead. Preferring to run outside line of the Hanford oval, Niemela broke free from the pack as Kaeding shot to second. Driving deep into the corners on the low line, Bud inched closer to the leader and began to apply heavy pressure. Several caution flags would plague the event and Kaeding would continue his assault. Niemela held tough and continued to slip away from the challenger. With both drivers racing hard and eventually side by side for several laps, Bud secured the lead on lap eighteen.

Once Kaeding assumed command, Bernal quickly jumped into second and began his attack. Within two laps, Ryan wrestled the lead away from Bud, however it was short lived. A red flag was displayed for a flip by Kevin Barnes, who walked away uninjured. Reverting back to the previous lap, Kaeding was back out front with Bernal close to his rear bumper. On the restart, Bernal slipped by the leader and his JFM teammate Chad Boespflug took third away from Niemela. Unfortunately, a three car tangle would knock Niemela, Boespflug, and Ricky Kirkbride out of contention four circuits later.

With five laps to go, Bernal held the top spot with Kaeding in second. Hamblin assumed third after starting thirteenth and "Hollywood" Danny Faria Jr. sat in fourth after his second charge from the back. Carlile, who started fifteenth, maintained the fifth position. With the green flag waving, Ryan had an great restart with Bud in hot pursuit. Faria slid into third, but suffered heartbreak on the next lap when he slipped off the racetrack's edge. Bernal was running strong during the closing laps, but Kaeding was still within striking distance.

On the white flag lap, Ryan shot down the back straight with Bud gaining ground. Kaeding drove his machine deep into turn three, executing a "slide job" for the lead. The pass worked to perfection and Bernal countered with a crossover move. It was a 2-car drag race to the finish line and at the checkered flags, it was Bud Kaeding taking the win. The large Hanford crowd cheered in approval to the dramatic finish.

Piloting Junior Bowman's #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Bud Kaeding unofficially clinched the championship by winning the Jim Turner Memorial. The 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion was second fast in time trials, won the Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heat Race #2, and started fifth in the main event.

Hollister's Ryan Bernal scored a close second in the Hanford feature. Driving Keith Ford's #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Bernal earned his second Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award, and finished second in his heat race. Climbing back to second in the standings, the Santa Maria track champion leads the USAC vs. ASCS "Grudge Series" point chase heading to Arizona.

Rusty Carlile of Bakersfield earned the night's Ringers Gloves / Kaeding Performance "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job Award" with a third place run after starting fifteenth. Piloting his #51 Southwest Contractors / N.T.S. Incorporated Bullet, the night's LRB Inc. Race Products Award Winner qualified eleventh and placed seventh in his heat race. Currently ninth in the standings, Carlile had his best run of the year at the Turner Memorial.

Tracy's Austin Liggett came home fourth in the Turner Memorial. Driving the family owned #83 Excel Environmental Services / Home Connections Inc. Maxim, Liggett was seventh quick on the night and claimed fourth in his heat race. As this writing goes to press, Austin is eleventh in points and in a close battle with Chris Gansen for Rookie of the Year honors.

Justyne Hamblin of Hanford scored fifth in the main event after starting thirteenth. Briefly holding third, the pilot of the JH Motorsports' #8 Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino / Kings River Commodities Speed Tech qualified fourth and scored fourth in her heat race. The 2009 Champion is tenth in points and the family plans to retire from racing at the end of the season.

Brownsburg, Indiana's Chad Boespflug raced Keith Ford's #72 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike to victory in the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Making his first start with the USAC West Coast Sprints, Boespflug qualified sixteenth and briefly held third in the main event after starting twelfth. The former SCRA 360 Champion was collected in a three car tangle late in the feature and scored fourteenth at Kings Speedway.

Tyler Dolacki of Fresno won his first career USAC West Coast heat race by claiming the DJ Safety sponsored event. Driving his #18X Ridgeline Framing / Norman Dietrich Inspection Service KPC, Dolacki was fifteenth quick in time trials and finished eighth in the Hanford feature. Sitting eighteenth in points, Tyler is gaining valuable seat time in a Sprint Car.

Hanford's Jared Little earned the program's Weld Racing Award with a tenth place run in the "Jim Turner Memorial." Piloting the family owned #25 Little Chiropractic / Brad's Smog & Tune Maxim, Jared qualified thirteenth and placed third in his heat race. Despite running a limited schedule, Little is nineteenth in the point standings.
