I undersand your point that these drivers choose this lifestyle and should sign what ever a fan wants, but in saying that alot of people have to remember that this is there job...go into a board room full of high priced executives and half way thru a meeting ask for there autographs....just remember this is there living and just pick the right time to ask for a signature....Sammy has always signed anything I want cause I ask at the right time...

Well said KIR. I have a bi- annual Division meeting with our CFO & CoO on Wed. of this week. I have learned to interpret the weather patters of people’s moods before pop off in some way that someone having a bad day wont care for. Remember, even the $1M a year CEO’s have 17 year old daughters that say FO to them the night before at times, etc. In any case they are human and entitled to some of life’s pressures and emotions. The good thing, for ever person having a bad day is you can and did find someone having a decent day. Also, Sammy is very likely his own biggest critic and toughest boss.

Why any adult wants another adults signature is beyond me
More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the
cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years
to come. Only the most average talent behind the
wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on
the track!

This really is no different than the Schatz one that was posted a month or 2 back, you'll get your opinions of people that say they chose the life and owe everyone that asks an autograph and you'll get those that say if you get one appreciate it and if you don't too bad, that guy doesn't owe you anything. My opinion is its hard to say what was going on at that time and I'm guessing there was a reason he didn't want to at that moment. With anyone who people want a picture with or autograph, they know when its going to open a door that leads to a line of people wanting the same thing and maybe he was just doing other things and didn't want that to happen at that moment.

Ron Bennington of Ron & Fez on XM radio has a great opinion along the same line of why any adult needs to keep a baseball they catch at a MLB game as well, catch the ball and give it to a kid near you. He's made comment along the same lines about autographs and why any adult needs another adults autograph.

Not acting like I'm greating than thow, just interesting to hear others opinions on it and it makes you think and that it is kinda ridiculous.

The only reason I would keep a foul ball is if I am at an American League park, a National League park, Triple A, Double A, etc. as the baseballs have different logos. For personal preference, that is pretty cool. However, as I had told my son when he was littler and would get foul balls all the time, the little kid twice younger than he would be thrilled to death, just as he was when he was a lot younger. Thus my son was giving away baseball to the little boys and girls around him. A great experience.

Kids love autographs and one should never be turned down. They look up to our race heros and gives them something to be proud of and show off to friends. Adults" I can kinda understand if you have some sort of diecast collectable as that is rather unique. However, just to sign a piece of paper is rather lame. Remember when the old track and series had programs and hand autograph pages for fans to have drivers sign? I think that would have been proper and something cool to look back upon in your later years. But for an adult to ask for an autograph "just because," I too do not understand.

Gee, didn't Sammy win on Sat night? I would think he would have been a good mood and willing to sign and talk to people. I'm assuming that the effort was made after the races were over. If not, then you may have gotten what you deserve. I'm not a Sammy fan, although I do appreciate his driving skill, but Sammy does his own set up calls and even works on the car himself at times. Personally, I would never approach any driver before or during the races unless he was clearly socializing with others outside of his crew. This is their work and just as I don't like people looking over my shoulder or interrupting while I'm working, they deserve the same consideration. With few exceptions (usually after an exceptionally bad or disappointing run), I have found virtually every sprint car driver willing to visit after the races for a minute or two. Give them a few minutes to get a drink, take off the driving suit or peel it down and talk to the crew, then approach them.

While I am not under the same pressures as a driver and team, I gotta side with Swindell on this one. It may have been the wrong time to approach him. I have had times when I am shooting "right sides" of cars from outside the track, and folks have come up to me asked some questions while cars are on the track at speed. I am a bit too busy even to start taking any picture orders at that point. I am happy to speak with folks at the track, but when there are cars out there and I am pointing my lens at them, I am a bit busy. Not only that, I am also trying to maintain a "situational awareness" of what is going on out on the track and a break in my concentration also affects my safety.

Just sayin'

It's great too see that some stills "get it".. Great post! Sammy was smiling, happy, and willing to sign/take pictures for quite some time after the races were over. He has his flaws, as we all do. But he was pretty flawless on Saturday night!!

Exactly.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Was this DURING the race night or AFTER the race night?

To me (as a fan), that makes a HUGE difference. If the Race night wasn't complete, YOU (UsacFan) had ZERO business in his pit area asking for an autograph. If the races were complete but they were working on the car you needed to wait until they were done before asking. If the races were over, they crew and Sammy were done with the car (tech inspection), that is the appropriate time to ask for an autograph.

Now, if you're an adult, what in the He## do you need another adults autograph for?? I have taken my 9 year old son to the pits and he has NEVER been turned down by ANY driver (including those that had rough nights or competely destroyed a car) because he's been respectful to them and their car (and the other fans lined up for an autograph.

2 years ago Tony Stewart was in K'ville and adult "fans" were extremely rude to him and if he chose not to sign anything, I wouldn't have blamed him. My son and I wandered the pits for over an hour prior to going to his pit. My son was respectful of Tony's personal space (can't say the same for the guy "hovering" over Tony's shoulder with the Cell Phone Camera) and asked him politely if he'd sign. Tony signed and thanked him for coming to the races. While we were walking back toward the pit gate, a group of drunk "fans" were yelling and screaming that Tony wouldn't sign anything for them and that he was a jerk. I looked back and he was signing away for others, my guess is that they were the jerks.

THIS IS JUST A SPORT..PEOPLE LIKE THAT MAKE U HATE THIS CLOWNS. THEY ONLY CELEBS AT THE "DIRT" TRACK. NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS DRIVING SKILLS. if that was the wrong time, DO U HAVE TO WAIT UNTILL TOMORROW OR WHAT??? THIS IS NO BUSINESS...IT'S PISSING OF A PERSON THAT PAY A TICKET TO SEE THEM RACE...

While not a diehard Sammy fan, I enjoy watching him race. Therefore, I avoid contact with him as his personal demeanor may make me think differently of him. Therefore, I just stay a fan of his as a race car driver, not an individual. The same with my 8 year old son. His favorite stuffed animal is named Sammy. Therefore, when he started watching races with me, he immediately was a fan of Sammy's. So, I bought him a shirt and a hat and he wears it everywhere. But, under no circumstances will I take him to meet him in the pits or get his autograph. Might crush him to see how he acts to the public. I have started to weed out the drivers you can talk to and the ones you can't talk to.
