Did anyone have a Ford powered Nance sprint car in the late eighties or a wider than normal chassis?

Your most likely asking about the swedged out frame rails on the '87 and later cars.

 

I thought they were for the -12 Brodix heads. I keep hearing this rumor too, but have never verified yet. I have 2 frames from '87 and neither had fords but they are wider up top.

Yep in Pennsylvania, a friend of mine runs a 358 Sprinter in Pa. And ran URC with and is good friends with Donnie Krietz and he has some pics of Krietz in a 88 Nance frame with a Big Block Chevy in it, the Big Blocks were outlawed in most series by then but they had several races at Pa. Tracks back then like open competition/cheater day shows and Krietz ran them and used a Big Block Chevy and he was an east coast Nance dealer then, in fact my friend bought one of his 88 model cars but was not widen on upper rails to accept a Big Block and won the 1989 KARS 358 Sprint championship.

The frame in question is a 1989 mid rail. The rail is shifted to the outside slightly so that part of the tubing is welded on the outside of the vertical cage post. It tapers in about 1" from the cage toward the front of the car.

Okay. I'm not familiar with 89 models. Sorry.

They were so different than what I was looking for that I didn't even try to learn.

Have a friend Charley Ford who had an 89 Model Nance Sprint frame, Mid Rail but it was not tapered out for a Big Block, bought it at Wichita,Ks. Auction in 2000 as a kit. Ran it till it got bent in Ft. Smith , Ark. Only 89 model I ever seen around these parts.

I am going on my memory here but I think there was an article in Open wheel about Nance building a frame for a Ford to go to CA for the wingless CRA racing. It had to be in the late 80s and I gave most of my Open wheels away. the top rail was wider for the Ford engine

I know in the mid-late 80's we did build some cars that were catered to he ford power plants.

No one in particular comes to mind that we built one for, but I believe we built some that went to California/ My Grandfather was always a Chevy Guy, but when Ford started lightning up the crank and other components he started to pay attention and did what he needed to do to try and grab that market.

The older I get, the more my memory fades.

I will now shut up about the down-nozzle -12 heads. LOL

 

When I got the Bobby Michnowicz 87 sprinter, the seller thought it was 'one of three' for Ford engines. I managed to get in touch with Bobby and he said no, they ran Chevy. Then I noticed several claiming they had 'one of three" Nances built for Ford engines! I knew that 10 did not equal 3, so I remembered the -12 thing and figured that was the deal.

The Nance/Ford subject keeps coming up because we keep finding sellers with claims that their Nance cars are "one of three".....................Yet we cannot find one that differs enough to show.

Bryon, Me and a friend were at your Grandfather house in the mid/late 90's when we were in Wichita,KS. For a race car auction in the winter and we knew your grandad was still building a few frames, Danny Wood was running them and having success in them at the time, anyway we found out where Laverne lived by just looking in phone book and he had a shop in back of their house and had a younger guy building the cars then,your Grandparents both came out to the shop , Laverne in a wheelchair I believe??, and still very sharp, showed us the Alum. Frame chassis he still had then, was very proud of that, he kept one table and jig setup I guess that he did not sell in the Nance Auction, cannot remember the kid working for him name, he gave us a few Nance stickers he had and I still have them ,he was happy we had came by and even unannounced,was a really neat deal to see him and all his status in chassis bldg. He carried, was a dam cool deal that day and a great memory to have. J.D.

J.D. about 7yrs. ago my son & i aquired a 100 inch Nance #12-81-51.w/o engine. It had welded in motor mounts for a ford the motor plate was drilled for both chevy & ford. It now has a stock chevy 350. We had it Ada about 3 yrs. ago Someone mentioned Charley Ford, it has #28 which was on it when we aquired it. It has '93 OKC sticker on left side panel. Hope this info is helpful. I've been lurking on this forum since day one. Thank's Warren.

CPW, you definitely have Charley Ford old Nance 100" car, seen pics of it at Ada when you ran there and now your ID # makes it for sure 12-81-51,remember that # as many times over the yr's. Pulling and stabbing motors in that car, he ran it from late 80's up until he sold it in mid 90's, wrenched on that car a many a night during that time, he has 2 sons and both of them drove it , although one of them drove it more than the other and then another guy in OKC drove it the last several yr's. Before Charley sold it, that Ol Nance was tough, it took some pretty wicked crashes , one at Dallas at Devil's Bowl in turn 4, hit the front wall and tore up EVERYTHING on it but frame, nothing but a ding or 2 in it and then another time at Enid in 88 it went for a ride during an MSCA show and sent fuel cell flying off of it but again chassis was pretty good,needed a few repairs, it been through a bunch of wars all over Ks.,Tx. and Okla., it mainly ran OKC and some at Lawton in the 90's as the 100" cars were having less and less places to run at as they were being replaced by Sprint Cars. You have definitely got a 100" car with a lot of history and survived a bunch of years and races, it was a tough Nance , remember stabbin a many a motor in it back then and many on a Friday afternoon about 3pm to go race at State Fair Speedway that night at 7pm. That seemed almost the Norm, LOL, it won some races as well on 1/4 mile at OKC as well as run the 1/2 mile too but ran mainly on 1/4 mile, body use to be yellow with blue,red, white in it,like I said wrenched on that car a many a night back then. The kid that was working for Laverne was Berry Nordstat he was a great welder.The car that he had in the shop was the titanium car it was a coilover car.The last steel coilovercar Laverne built is in the Kansas auto racing museum Chapman Kansas. I stoped there a couple of times and Laverne would start saying My Car My Car and we would push his chair to the shop and look at the car He was one great guy and I was very proud to have knowen him.

OK Sparkplug, Ti car it was not the Alum. One, your right he was very proud of it, always nice everytime I had the privilege to see him, whether at Nance Speed Equip. On N 29th St. or at his house.Took time to speak whether you were a fan or there to buy a whole car. J.D.

Need some history on this Nance. Was the 8th car built in 1987 and was the first design change that Nance made that year. Number on chassis is 1-87-8A. It ran USAC NCRA. Any info is appreciated.
