What year was the last picture of Herb in the outlaw car? I believe the J38 pitting next to Copeland is a car driven by Jon Johnson owned by the Martin Bros out of Oberlin, Ks.

This photo is in 1981 because that is when we switched over to Goodyear 100%, in 1980 Sammy was seen in the car with Firestones on. That is Zack Zacula in the cowboy hat. Not sure I spelled his last name right. Zack did alot of the interior work on our seats. Of course that Old man Nance leaning over the truck bed talking to him. Hard to tell, but that's me leaning over the right rear.

Nice pis. Thanks for posting them

it was 1981 or 1982,thats when herb and carrol nance raced the car.won the n.c.r.a...so the actual date and year i don't know !!!!! racin the n.c.r.a. was expensive, the pay out after winning did not cover the expence, i think thats why nance didn't do it any more...

It was 1981, because that was the year that Schneider built our engines. In 82 Gaerte built a few and in the later part of the year we had some sponsership from Jerry Wilson @ Chet Wilson Engine Service. You are correct in that the expense certainly out weighed the payoff. We raced that circuit to sell 100" cars...that is all. Herb was one heck of a "Dry Slick" racer!

I am not sure of the town, but I know he was in Western Ks. Super nice guy! Built a great engine also. To my knowledge we never have one failure.

Ray...No one ver remebers who finishes second. For some reason Gary Bettenhausen is coming to mind. I don't think that is right though. I know we whipped them so bad that night they protested everything they could on our car. It was funny to watch my dad keep taking their money. Those USAC guys couldn't believe that we beat em that bad without cheating. lol Back then the old man was famous for putting on some real soft tires and letting Herb feather it gently thru the corners. By the time the competitions hard tires got hot we were long gone. I watched that race from turns 3-4. what a thing of beauty!

It is so neat to get a point of view from a true insider on Herb winning the first UvN showdown.

So....The tires being soft, and Herb going easy to save as much as he could, but go fast early did most of the trick? That makes more sense than what I heard down here.

By the time the rumor mill made my part of the country, (So. Okla), 'people in the know' (which they weren't) said Herb had a $14,000 motor from California! Ya know, engines are great, but a driver still has to outdrive the other drivers with $14k motors! Know whut uh mean?

Thanks for the truth!

You know Brian we did have a couple of engines we traded Shavers for, but I don't remeber running one in our champ car. I think they were used in the outlaw car.We were running a 312 ci in Herb's car and I believe that night it was Gaerte, but not 100%. I can recall alot of racers laughing at my dad, for running real soft tires on hot Summer nights or even daytime shows. Herbie was just that good! But, he wasn't good at driving the truck and trailer during the daytime! We had to keep an eye on him because he would go to sleep behind the wheel. lol
