MICHNOWICZ TIES HIS SON WITH BAKERSFIELD LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR WIN!
(Placentia, CA, July 28, 2011) Longtime veteran Bobby Michnowicz scored his third win of the season and tied his teenage son, Kevin, for the most wins in 2011 in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series when he bested the field last Saturday night at "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," the Bakersfield Speedway.
Michnowicz, who lives in Lomita, only gets in the car on nights when his son takes off. Thus far in 2011, the family patriarch is three for three.
When the green light came on to start the 20-lap main event, San Marcos' John Sparland beat pole sitter Dan Lancaster (Imperial Beach) to the first turn. Placentia's Dan Hillberg got a rocket start in the bright orange Tobey Sampson #82 and quickly went around Lancaster for second. However, Hillberg brought out the first yellow of the main when he spun in turn four on the opening circuit. He ended up finishing last and that was very costly as he is now 147 points behind series leader Tim Brown.
There was a complete restart and once again Sparland beat the pack to turn one. Defending series champion Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley, was a man on a mission and before the end of the first lap, he relegated Lancaster to third and started to chase down Sparland. Lurking just behind was Michnowicz who raced his way into third on the fifth lap.
Kramer, running on the bottom, slowly but surely chased down Sparland and he relieved him of the lead in turn one on the eighth lap. Once out front, the 29-year-old veteran built a good sized lead.
Kramer was turning 15 second laps and had about a half straight lead when Michnowicz charged into second on lap 10. Michnowicz, running the top, quickly closed the gap between himself and the leader. On lap 14, a lapped car came into play and Kramer, still on the bottom, was held up by the lapper. Coming off turn two, Michnowicz raced by the lapped car and Kramer for the lead.
Michnowicz put a few car lengths between himself and Kramer and even a couple of late race yellows could not hold the 1994 CRA champion back and he got the trophy for his third win of 2011. Kramer came home second. Point leader Brown, of Wildomar, who has only finished out of the top five once all year, finished third and padded his point lead over Hillberg. Kramer's brother Seth, also of Spring Valley finished fourth with Anaheim Hills veteran Guy Maresch fifth.
Michnowicz and Jarrett Kramer won the heat races earlier in the night.
While Brown continues to built his lead in the championship hunt, Kramer moved from sixth to third in the standings and is within 100-points of second place Hillberg. Hemet's Alexander Bissett, who had problems and did not start the main, dropped to fourth in the standings. Anaheim's Dale Gamer remains anchored in his familiar fifth place spot.
The next two race for the CLS will both be on its home track, Perris Auto Speedway. The first is this Saturday, July 30th, when it joins the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series and the Senior Sprints at the Kindoll Classic. They will be back at The PAS once again on August 20th.
