The post about Thunderbird brings home one of the problems with short track racing today. TOO MANY CLASSES! 56 cars spread across 6 classes. Boy, that had to be exciting on that big old track.
Back in my day (eyeroller, I know) we had that many cars in my class, or more. In my opinion, there needs to be a max of 3 classes, each of which is visually different than the other 2. 5 or 6 classes only dilutes the purse money and the glory (which is why we race). Most areas should have a Factory Stock, Modified and Sprint. "But what about a guy who wants to race a sprint but can't afford to run with the big guys?" Sorry. Life isn't fair.
I can't believe these guys work all week on the car, spend all their money, and pull to the race track to battle it out with 7 of their closest competitors. Whoooee.

Mike -- sometimes seven looks like a big entry list. I'm with you. Make rules compromises and combine some of those classes until a time when there are enough cars to legitimately field the division. I once thought that five-hour shows stretching into the wee hours of the morning were the only thing that could drive me away from dirt track racing, but two- and three-car races might be an even bigger frustration.

I agree with this analogy 100%!!!
this is a huge part in the down turn of car counts. each track seems to have one class that carrys all the rest!!! I say get em down to 3 classes, the car counts will go up in each class and the show the fans recieve will be much improved!!!

I'm thinking maybe the Hutch Nationals might have had that problem. A 15 lap main event for the sprints. Kind of like reducing the ounces and charging the same price in the grocery store.

I'd still like to hear an explanation for that abomination at the Hutch Nationals. Other than, "That's what the NCRA officials said would be run."

I agree with Mike except there needs to be an inexpensive entry level class such as a bone stock front wheel drive or enduro type car to get the person who always wanted to some where to get the bug.i agree on the sprint car and modified scenario and i love the factory stocks we ran , but there expensive too.we also need to work on getting the younger ones involved for the future of the sport.

None of the features at the Hutch Nationals were longer than 15 laps. And they still shredded some tires or had flats.
"But what about a guy who wants to race a sprint but can't afford to run with the big guys?" Sorry. Life isn't fair.
305's, 2bbl. e-sprint, 360's, 410's. I'm sure there is other names out there? Us older farts had it pretty good around here in the 70's. We just had the super modifieds, jr. modifieds, late models and hobby stocks. Some tracks had different names for their late models classes, such semi lates like at 81 Speedway
