I hope someone with some background on this topic can respond. When we know we're facing wind and high temperatures, a lethal combination that tends to pin race cars to the bottom of the track, is there ever any thought towards leaving the bottom dry and over-watering the higher lines. Would that make a difference? Is it already done? I'm clueless on track prep, but have always wondered what can be done to widen a dirt track when the weather won't cooperate.

Mossman,
If you are bringing this up in regards to the High Temperatures and Winds that Oklahoma has faced in the southwest the last few weeks, and for the fact that the OCRS will be making a return to Lawton this weekend, I as well am wondering what could be done in advance to help out the track conditions. It does seem that everytime the OCRS is at Lawton, it is hot and windy and that the track goes dry and becomes one lane around the bottom. It would be nice to see the track a little more racey and less on the bottom.

That is a good question and I know this may be a little hard to believe, but the past 3 weeks including the ASCS show, the sprintcars were running the top at Lawton, with it being dry. I do not know what they have done lately, but it has put more into the sprintcar show the last few weeks. Last saturday there were many slide jobs and I thought it was a good show and I am looking forward to the OCRS show this weekend after last week. Maybe someone will see this and add a little info to what they have changed.

I think its because it's been slick top to the bottom. Before there was always some bite on the very bottom and everyone was fighting to stay on the bottom. With it being the same from top to bottom you can running anywhere on the track. Last weekend was the best track at lawton i have seen since i started racing there. Black from top to bottom. Monty isnt going out before each race and putting water on it has helped a lot. When he does that it runs to the bottom making it one lane. Just my thoughts.

I don,t know what all they have been doing, but know they have had the top of the track tilled heavy and watering it up there tru out the night,. I agree Michael, the track has been good lately, Last week it was pretty much all on the top, (at least by the sprint feature) , but previous weeks it has two groves and fast !...... Great job Lawton Speedway !
elbows up...stand on it hard.., & get that win!!

From what I've seen in photos etc they do a superior job. The way it should be done. I'm not sure what their car counts are though and that makes a difference. I believe the piece of farm implement (a rotary hoe) they use does the trick.

I think every track should have one.

I remember when I was a kid in the 70's, track prep was done with the wheel pack session done clockwise and possibly the watering of the track done in that direction as well.
No body can give me the reason it was done that direction then, but not nowadays.
Any thoughts on that,anybody ?
