Howie "The Jet" Sewell who for years had been one of Tulsa Speedways all time favorite drivers lost his battle with cancer tonight. Howie is mostly remembered as being the driver of the C.L. Boyd #53 and then later the #65 car at Tulsa, OKC and at NCRA events during the 1980's. Howie drove the Suchy #76 for a time after the CL Boyd ride. Howie was always a crowd favorite as he was always on the gas and always had a big smile on his face and always had time to chat with a fan or another racer.

Texas Services: Howie's funeral will be at 2:00 this Saturday 18 December 2010 at the Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur, TX.

The address is 405 E Main Street, Decatur, Texas 76234. Phone 940 627 5959.

Broken Arrow Services: Copied this from the site Oklahoma Tidbits.

A memorial service will be held for Howie "The Jet" Sewell on Tuesday 12/21 at 3pm. The service will be held at the New Hart Fellowship in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. This will be a casual attire event. Please bring any pictures of Howie and feel free to share any stories you may have as well.

His wife requested that everyone dress like they are goin to the races and bring any pics they have of Howie.

Wednesday morning I was talking to Shane and he said he hadn't heard anything lately from Howie. I can tell you many hoped Howie would come out of this like his driving-

Going in would be "damn the torpedoes"

coming out, well , sometimes he'd be on foot, but Howie always came out.

Yesterday morning I get up and find Howie has passed away. First thing I wanted to do was stop everything, go into my files and put together a fitting tribute for him. I spent all day at work thinking and planning what I'd do when I got home. Since the computer is locked for "in house" usage only, and I have to build tires or help with little time to spare, I had to wait until I got home. Then I saw all the great stories coming out. So, the best I can do is go back to that kid I was in the early 80's , when I was reading about "Sewell and Ewell" in the papers, and would marvel over the USAC sticker Howie had on the side panel of his Dirt Champ car.

When I did get to see Howie, he always had a crowd around him, and was always upbeat , and well, animated.

Oh yeah, he also seemed "Ten Feet Tall". So I wrote this for Howie

Into the sun

against the wall

nerves of steel

ten feet tall

sparks for dreams

you bring our way

while burning rings

into the clay

They drive all night just to watch you go around there

watch you brave the risk and risk the fall

on borrowed time we all spend it slowly

and watch you blaze the trail for us all

Hey Legend RUN

Ten Feet Tall

spark our dreams

against the wall

If you fail

you don't let down

we'll hold your name

on solid ground.

for Howie......................Rest in peace Sir, you were a bigger deal than you ever knew. Thank you for the humor and the stories you made, on and off the record.

Howie Sewell, This may be his first year in Supers? I have read where 1978 at Muskogee was his first race?

He might have driven some in 1978 but this picture is 1979. The car is Norman Gumm's Stanton that he ran the whole 78 seson with Mike Peters and Dee Zelmer. Norman sold the car after the season to james Roberts for Howie to drive.I think that James was Howie's brother in law.
