Sprint Car Drivers, Owners, Fans, etc --

Listed below is a private message sent to me on Who Won.com by Charlie Davidson in regard to my brother's accident at Lone Star Speedway. It appears to me he is speaking on behalf of the track indicating something other than debris caused my brother to nearly lose his foot. I indicated to him in my reply that my Dad, Mike Evans was willing to speak further about the damage, etc. Charlie never called. My father wants the following response posted to Charlie and for everyone else interested in what happened to Todd.

Regards,

Janet Evans Webb

I was there in #1 turn, we didnt find anything before and after his spin out. Some one would have found this item that ripped his under carriage All of the push cars and its drivers have looked back through there jeeps to look for parts that end up on the raceway. there were none. I also was in the red chevy wrecker, parked at the edge on the entance of #1 turn, I still did not ever see anything that could of torn his car up. Are your sure he didnt loose his engine [blown up]??? I have always liked your brother, and always glad to see him do well, but the idea of blaming the track for his injury just flat makes me mad I am sorry, when any one straped in a sprint car to race anywhere, they are taking a chance of getting hurt. To blame the track-----??? what do you think Lonestar speedway didnt do??? The had a resure truck, with trainned personal to respond, and a amblance which Tood refused to go get checked, the if I thought that my driver was hurt , WE would have left to get looked at. not wait until after 1am to pickup the $50.00 that he won. Now Janet, I am not trying to say that Todd didnt hit something while racing, but I want to know what you think that could of been done differnt to change the outcome, except that Todd didnt get into his car.

Charlie:

1. Debris was caused by a car in the first heat race that crashed. The driver has contacted us. It was a brake rotor that exploded during the crash and also a shock that blew apart from the car. He is not sure if everything was accounted for after the crash. We found a shock shaft a big piece of wood during intermission.

2. Todd's engine did not blow up. The throttle was torn out of the floorboard, keeping the engine powered up with it running about half throttle. Todd had to turn off the fuel and engine to stop the car after striking the debris and while his left foot was pinned beneath the brake pedal.

3. Rescue truck and trained personnel ripped one side of the hood and side panel off the car exposing the motor and fire wall, not Todd's feet. Apparently they never heard of using a screwdriver on zeus fasteners I guess?

4. One of your jeeps brought the piece of the hood to our trailer.

5. Todd was freed by a friend of his from Oklahoma not the trained rescue crew.

6. We did not wait for the 50-dollar winnings, we left at 12:30am when Todd could travel. It was the same time as #6 late model who pitted next to us and helped load Todd's car because he was unable to load it.

7. Todd did not refuse medical treatment or a trip to the hospital in the ambulance as he was in tremendous pain and shock. He was under severe duress when forced to sign a waiver release. One of the EMT's told Todd "you like okay."The track personnel were only interested in getting the release signed, not Todd's health and best interest.

8. The track owner did not personally check on Todd all night long. I talked with Sam H, Sr. after the races, one reason we were late leaving. I stated my case about the track debris. Sam added in his opinion it was a racing deal.

I asked about the track's insurance. He hesitated because Todd did not go in an ambulance (which was not offered) and said we had no coverage for an x-ray later. I asked him who is insurance carrier was, he said K and K. This was not so. I called Shirley at ASCS National Headquarters in Tulsa and found out it was Jones Brown Inc Motor Sports in Las Vegas, when in fact this company is a mid level go between coverage company with a higher level reinsurer involved.

Damage to the car is a motor plate, one inch tube under motor plate, throttle, brake pedal, left frame rail split wide open, tail tank damage and floor board demolished.

The reason I am stating this is if that debris which announcer Darin Short saw come off Todd's right rear had not went off the track or into the fence somewhere, it could have killed somebody and we already know Todd's left foot was within a mere half inch of being amputated.

Charlie, you asked my daughter what Lone Star Speedway could have done to prevent this from happening, suggesting Todd not race that night. The facts are he did and struck debris which the track should have cleared. Drivers do not bear a responsibility to clear debris!
