On the way home from Lincoln (Pa.) Saturday night, my friend and I began discussing tracks that have closed in recent years and nearly all of them closed due to urban sprawl. We then talked about tracks located in the middle of a town. There really aren't that many of them left anymore. I have been to about 150 tracks, and some of the obvious ones I have been to that are still around are Knoxville (Iowa), Port Royal (Pa.) and Orange County (N.Y.)
Of those three, Orange County probably doesn't have much time left anymore as a racetrack. I suppose Fonda (N.Y.) is also located in town as well. So what other tracks are left that are still in the middle of a town?
Thought this would be a light-hearted topic compared to some of the threads that go on here from time to time.

Gee, singlefile, the west coast has lots. Calistoga is just like Knoxville. Middle of a small town, half-mile etc. Others include one of the all time best ( I feel) Chico, Ca. Tulare, Visalia, Cotttage Grove, Or. Oildale, Ca. (now called Bakersfield Speedway) and so on. Are we just luckier ? No, the east and midwest has racing 7 nites a week, SOMEWHERE nearby....... and for that I am jealous !!

West Liberty Ia. (battling cerfews off & on for years)
Davenport Iowa (Almost right in the middle of Davenport) also use to be right next to a drive-in theatre. When we were small and the folks took us to the drive in we would find a high spot where we could get a glimpse of the race action instead of watching the movie.

Osky, Hawkeye Downs (if you still consider it a racetrack instead of an oval parking lot) East Moline IL, Independence, Maquoketa, Iowa State Fairgrounds, Fayette Co (in West Union Iowa, not Echo Valley Raceway in same town)

Hartford Speedway Park in Michigan is right in town. Being a Friday Night track and in a big HS football town, they tried a deal a few years ago that they would only race before, during halftime, and after the local HS football game. So the track sat silent while the football game was being played 3 blocks away. They now switch to Saturdays during Football season.

It is indeed a shame what a few do gooders did to Hawkeye Downs.
Shame on them!
