I remember a vintage show a few years ago, They had dozens of sponsors and gave out prizes from those sponsors. I believe it was by a drawing to the participants. There was some heavy hitters donating prizes, tires, helmets, speed parts, food coupons etc. I believe they ended up with something for all.

Skip Roberts says to have a safely prepared car when you arrive. Would not be surprised if they at least do a walk around and give the cars a once over. No mention of dates on belts, but would expect them to check condition of belts and anchors. He also says a Snell 2000 or newer helmet and eye protection is mandatory, as well as fire resistant suit, underwear, gloves and shoes. My belts are a couple years out of date, my helmet is old enough to vote, and so far, my underwear has never burst into flames, but if that keeps me off the track, then will be exhibition only. Hopefully, I will at least get on the track for a photo op. Best bet would be to contact Skip for particulars. His e mail is: [email protected]

Brian after talking to Mr Estes at Wichita Falls I also have been thinking of going to Belville. Was wondering what gear to run and how big is the track?

I know it's a 5/8ths mile, banked. But as far as gearing? I don't know. Since they may be going at a pretty good clip, but not racing..........I would start with what they would have ran OKC 1/2 mile with, and think a bit taller on the ratio.

Any idea what that gear would be?

I'd start with somewhere around a 5:28. Just remember you can circle the place all night and never find a straight, You will notice the grandstands go by once in a while and I don't know if they still do but they used to have numbers on signs on the fence for the turns. A lot of midgets have burnt up motors the first time they ran the place since they find they can flat foot it all the way around. If possible run the fuel a little on the rich side to keep from burning up a piston. Scotty

Thank you Scotty!

I've heard that place likes to eat motors for dinner.

I ran a 4.86 there & thought it was to low. I would start with a 4.54 & go from there. I am talking about a 1,400 lb car + driver & no wing. To go fast, drive deep in the corners, slide up & set the car to come off the turns at each end. That gives you a chance to burp the engine which is better than holding the power on all the time. Just one opinion (SAVE THE ENGINE). ..Luther

Sounds too kool to be able to run flat out set the car up and drive it out and back off. Planning on going. Thanks for the response.

I'm pretty sure the officials will have the reigns on any flat out racing or anything close to it. We don't want to read about another Knoxville vintage show tragedy at Belleville. Belleville is a bad fast mean track. I remember the 1st person I seen flip at Belleville back in the 78/79 era. It was Shane Carson without a wing. If he is out there he can tell you it wasn't fun.

Yeah, and it is easy to create a commotion by getting people thinking it's a race. It is not, of course.

We ALL KNOW IT IS AN EXHIBITION, RIGHT?

Everybody who has a car knows it, but they like knowing that EVERYBODY ELSE KNOWS IT TOO.

That kind of fear has stifled the growth down south of OKC for vintage cars.

To quote Max Estes, "It's all about semantics- once you get there, you can see what is going on."

The whole point is about fun with the cars and people we like to be around.

Belleville is the place where KAR began, from what I remember Tom Barclay telling me. Around 1988 or thereabouts.

3 midgets , Tom and 2 friends embarked on a trip up there to a car show. Once there, they ran into a long haired guy that had an old jalopy. Everybody got along so well, they formed KAR.

I think Tom Barclay is the only surviving member of that first group.

Didn't think I was listening, did you Tom? I did.

It did sound like I was promoting speed but running a pattern that allows the engine to "get its breath" is the best way to run Belleville. Luther
