Dear Kelly Ogle

Why after 40 yrs plus would the city of Okc want to shut down State Fair Speedway.I know it has problems but look at the revenue. Just myself i go every weekend threw the summer. Its a corndog at the track Ihop after the races and fill up the tank at the local convinent store.I probally spend close to $100.00 dollars every time i go. Thats just me. How much does this track bring to the city every weekend in revenue?

Thanks
Lance Wilson

Please look into this for us the race track fans.

The state fairgrounds has likely seen its last motor race because $400,000 in electrical repairs must immediately be made before racing could be safely conducted next season, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said Monday night. And even if those repairs were made, more money would have to be invested into the aging track by 2012 to get the speedway into compliance with the federal American Disabilities Act, he said. “They (State Fair Board) just don’t think it is a good investment,” Cornett said. State Fair Speedway completed its 55th season of racing last summer. The decision was made long ago that it would remain open as long as racing could be safely conducted, but no more capital dollars would be invested in it, Cornett said. “The track has served us well for 50 years, but it’s not the best place for racing the next 50 years,” Cornett said. “The decision has long been made we were not going to invest more capital dollars in the track because of the wishes of the neighborhoods around it.” Track promoter Lanny Edwards is not being offered a renewal on his lease. Edwards thinks the electrical issues are a smokescreen. “They have dreamed all of this up in my opinion,” Edwards said. “They’ve been trying to get rid of that grandstand for quite some time. I think it’s a bad deal that they are doing the racing community this way.” Edwards contends State Fair Board officials and city leaders simply want to abolish State Fair Speedway and replace it with something more profitable. “They want a building over there that they can use 200 days a year, not 55 days a year (like State Fair Speedway),” said Edwards, who has leased the track for eight years. Edwards, who is in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, has owned and operated race tracks for more than 40 years. He owns dirt tracks in Mesquite, Texas, and Lawton. Cornett said the city is willing to work with a developer who might want to bring motor racing to Oklahoma City at another site. But the neighborhoods around the state fairgrounds will not support a new race track there, he said. “I am not oblivious to the up side and the economic impact (of having motor racing in Oklahoma City), but nor can I ignore the thousands of people that live near the track that put up with it in the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and now another decade,” Cornett said. Before weekly races began at State Fair Speedway in the late 1950s, drivers competed at Taft Stadium, approximately 3 miles north on May Avenue. Edwards, who says he has one year left on the State Fair Speedway lease, is hopeful there will be racing at the Oklahoma City track next season. Edwards said he pays $40,000 a year to lease the track, and it has been profitable each summer. “I am going to check it out a little more, but I really don’t know that I can do anything,” he said. “I think they just made a plan to do it (close the track). They’ve always planned on getting rid of it by 2012.” Edwards said there have been few complaints from the neighbors about the noise. “We have no problem with the community,” he said. “That’s something they’ve dreamed up.” More than 100 drivers participated last summer at State Fair, many from the Oklahoma City area. Some came from Tulsa, Kansas and Texas to race each Friday night from March through August. Oklahoma will lose its second major dirt track in the last decade if State Fair Speedway fails to operate next season. Tulsa Speedway closed several years ago. “It would affect us quite a bit, because it was the best race track around here,” said Oklahoma City resident Dutch ter Steege, a long time driver at State Fair. “It’s sad, but I’ve seen it coming. And personally, I don’t think they’re going to fix it. They’ve been talking about this for a long time.” Norman resident Danny Jennings, who won a sixth sprint car championship this year, said: “I don’t know why they’re thinking that it needs to be an issue now when they’re saying we only have a couple of years left to race there. “I would think that if the clock is ticking and we’ve still got two years left, why would they want to raise a stink about our electrical problem now?” Jennings said closing State Fair Speedway might force some drivers to quit racing. “It would really affect our racing community because everybody likes to race locally,” he said. “Most of the people that race around here live around here. All the locals will have to start traveling more. “Our classes in those places only pay like four or five hundred to win. When it starts costing you four or five hundred to get there and race and come home, people aren’t going to be wanting to do that'.

I'm new here and new to the racing scene. I'm just a lowely pit worker, but I'm someone that knows politics and how to find new and unconventional solutions to problems. I'm a successful business owner, I'm the president of a statewide trade association, and I'm on the board of directors for a national association, as well as the many committes I've served on, I've also worked with focus groups, lobbyists and lawmakers and so forth.

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes, but the posts I've read about trying to influence Lanny or contacting our councilmen and lawmakers were a futile effort. Unfortunately, the plans for shutting down SFS have most likely been in place for a few years. If any of you are truly serious about saving SFS, there's only one way. It won't be easy, and its not going to be quick, but it can be done.

Get SFS listed on the Historic Registry and it will be there forever! I know this may seem far fetched, but if any of you are serious about fighting this "progress" of the City of Oklahoma City, you're going to have to take the fight to a new level!

Well we need someone with your knowledge of the political system and the bs that goes on to help. Many of us do not want anything to do with it b/c we either do not ahve the time or do not have the care to mess with them.

That's the purpose of associations! You have the association delegate tasks to the members so the work load is not substantial for any single person, and the time to completion is reduced!

If the city says there is a problem with the community surrounding SFS and we say there is not then prove them wrong! A door-to-door petition signed by those who live by SFS who have no problem with us racing there on Friday nights would say ALOT! The only thing we would need to make sure of is that whoever signs it is a registered voter. If you aren't registered then go get it done! Nobody will listen to us if they don't think they may be able to get a vote out of us!

Race Fans and Drivers;

As much of you know, I am huge fan of the dirt racing scene in Oklahoma. I grew

up in and around the dirt tracks of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

The growth of this great sport in Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas in Oklahoma

should be on the forefront of the minds of the decision makers.

Not dollars and cents!

I am hugely disappointed in the decision by the elected officials of Oklahoma City

to include the Mayor, City Council Members, and others who have a silent voice.

They are willing to put caiptal dollars in place for the Cox Center to cater to ice hockey

(AHL). That caters to a specific group. I am a hockey fan, however, Lets Share the

Wealth. That is what is promoted by the Chamber of Commerce and other voices

within OKC.

A coupe of thoughts somce to mind;

Have anyone of them ever witnessed the great

show on Dirt that is exhibited each and every Friday Night at SFS?

The answer to that question is a definite NO!

The revenue that is generated by the fans and race teams at SFS cannot

be understated. The local family atomsphere, comaraderie, and friendships

that have taken place over the years is of huge importance to the landscape

of Oklahoma City.

Additionally, I believe SFS may be classified as a historical landmark for Oklahoma

City and dirt racing. It has been having stars of the future test and improve their skills and

craft.

With my journalism background and a love of this great sport, I am going to take

this as a personal challenge to myself to get racing back at SFS. I will tap into my

network of associates to see and promulgate a plan to go forward. I have definite

ideas on the way we can get racing back at this storied and historic racing facility.

I will not take this lying down and without a fight.

If all race fans and drivers ban togther our voice can be HEARD!

Sincerely,

John E. Banks
