Looking for any information as to who built the Dave Ross super #54 he ran in 1970 and what ever happened to it. It was painted black with silver lettering, sponsored by Bill's Speed Shop. It was one of the first "T" bodied supers that ran in Oklahoma City during this time.

Photo from the Ken Greteman collection contributed by Bob Mays.
This was the 69 car. The 1970 car was probably the same.

Yes, this is the 1969 super, I believe he sold this car to a Tulsa driver after 1969. The 1970 car was a brand new car with the black color scheme. that is the car I would like to know about.

There is a b&w picture of the 70 car on page 114 of Bob Mays' book "High Plains Thunder". It was owned by Bill Flegler(Bill's Speed Shop) of Dodge City. Flegler owned or sponsored Larry Dewell's car in 1969. He owned Ross's ride until 72, when Dave gave up the supermods.

Thank you for the info on that car. Do you know who built it? I have a color action shot of Dave driving it at OKC for the "Nationals" as they called it during 1970. It was a beautiful race car.

Remember the 54 that was out of OKC that had the same kick out on the 5 like Dave always had. I wonder if that car started out being Dave's car and the new owner kept the kicked-out (slanted) 5

In searching some old newpaper accounts, it appears that Larry Dewell was the original owner at least as far back as 1968. He apparently fabricated /assembled or bought it new around that time. I am no expert in construction, but it looks like it was, or was based on a Culbert(CAE) design. If anyone knows Larry, give him a shout. He's still in

Larry Dewell is someone who kind of got lost in racing history, but who was a great driver that won alot of races. I have talked to him, and he really likes to talk about racing when he was an active driver. It took me several calls to talk him down, as he only has a cell, but I finally made contact with him. If anyone wants to get in touch with him, let me know at [email protected] and I will give you the number.

As far as I can recall, I think Dave's car was sold after the 1970 or1971 season to Les Steinert. I have a program from OKC in1972 showing Jim Harkness driving this car. It sure looks like the same car. It was painted like a metal flake red with #11as the number. They had taken off the nose piece. I also think that the Jon Johnson car #86 that is above on the forum page is in fact the same car. The #54 car from OKC is probably a Jack Walker built car and a driver named SteveScott owned it when it was new in 1973, than they painted it just like Dave's 1970 car. Bobby Walker drove it for the1974 season.

I have always wonder about the 86 with the flames. The 54 and then early 70's Steinert cars makes since now. I had heard a story that Jon worked for a summer or two at Nance's and this car was ordered but the buyer didn't buy it and Jon took it.
Jon might be a lurker at there. One of the daughters was the 2nd person to sign the original guestbook.
