Sexton with yet another mechanical issue this season during his hot lap session and was done for the night. Wernes spins on his initial attempt, but was able to make it out to take that single lap at the end.
Lane Automotive Heat Race (10 Laps) Top-4 Transfer. 1. Scott Biertzer [2]; 2. Kasey Kahne [5]; 3. TJ Luedke [8]; 4. Matt VanDerVere [10]; DNF-Scott Lenz [9]; DNF-Nick Alden [7]; DNF-Ty Bartz [1]; DNF-Todd Hepfner [3]; DNF-Scott Uttech [4]; DNF-Brooke Tatnell [6].
Initial start is marred after contact out of turn 2 sends Hepfner flipping along the backstretch collecting Uttech. Tatnell clipped in the fray sending him upside down as well. All drivers were Ok. Bartz in his season debut calls it a race after push-off. Biertzer into the lead using the high line out of turn 2 over Kahne, Luedke, VanDerVere and Alden. Vandy and Luedke swap the 3rd spot for a couple laps each using high/low lines. The Red is back out on the 5th lap after Alden catches the wall through turns 3-4, rides along the top side and tumbles down onto the track. He was Ok. Luedke is maybe the only one running low from the restart holding that 3rd spot. About as the White Flag is out, Lenz catches seemingly the same spot as the other SEL Trucking sponsored machine to complete the carnage in this deal upside down. He was Ok. Biertzer controls the Green-White-Checker finale as all remaining cars make the transfer.
Diversified Machine Inc. Heat Race 1. Donny Goeden [3]; 2. John Haeni [5]; 3. Mike Kertscher [6]; 4. Billy Hafemann [2]; 5. Lance Fassbender [4]; 6. Billy Warren [1]; 7. Russel Borland [8]; 8. Brandon Thone [9]; 9. Cainen Riemann [10]. DNF-Todd King [7].
Warren takes the lead over Goeden and Kertscher until the Yellow is out after Hafemann loops and stalls in the slick through turn 3 completing the opening lap. Riemann spins in turns 3-4 on the restart. King makes his season debut called it a race around the 4th lap. Goeden takes the lead next time around with a perfect slide-job through turns 1-2. Haeni and Kertscher send Warren to 4th one lap later. Hafemann redeems himself coming from the tail with nearly the 3rd spot at the Checkers.
Wesmar Racing Engines Heat Race 1. Joey Saldana [5]; 2. Mike Reinke [4]; 3. Darrell Dodd [7]; 4. Jereme Schroeder [9]; 5. Adam Miller [8]; 6. Joe Symoens [2]; DNF-Steve Meyer [3]; DNF-Billy Balog [6]; DNF-Kris Spitz [1]. DNS-Dan VanDerVere.
Initial start waved off. Spitz spins to a stall in turn 1 as Schroeder gently slows to a stop alongside when one lap is booked. Spitz is done hauled off on the hook. Saldana had burst into the lead using the low line while everyone one else ran high. Meyer, Reinke, Dodd follow on the restart. Schroeder and Dodd battle for the transfer spot for a lap or two on the restart. Symoens is lapped around the 8th. Saldana cruised to the Checkers as Reinke takes Meyer for the 2nd spot down the backstretch when suddenly an odd deal for Meyer spins, jumps the banking and pirouettes into the infield tire barrier low in turn 4. He was Ok.
Joie of Seating Heat Race 1. Craig Dollansky [6]; 2. Wayne Modjeski [3]; 3. Scotty Neitzel [5]; 4. Andy Hunt [2]; 5. Bill Wirth [4]; 6. Kirk Fehrman [8]; 7. Dave Uttech [1]; 8. Mark Wernes Jr. [9]; 9. Phillip Mock [7]. DNS-Tommy Sexton.
Mock busts a 360 spin through the middle of turns 1-2 negating the initial start. Modjeski uses the low line into turn 1 for the lead over high running Dollansky. Dollansky takes that lead on the 2nd lap after Modjeski slides out of the low line just enough to allow the pass through turns 1-2. Crowd scene for 3rd for much of the mid-race action between Neitzel, Hunt, Uttech.
Special Dash (6 Laps) 1. Kasey Kahne [1]; 2. Joey Saldana [6]; 3. Craig Dollansky [5]; 4. Scotty Neitzel [4]; 5. John Haeni [3]; 6. Scott Biertzer [2].
Rare IRA Dash event with no bearing on the Feature to soothe the Lizards and Stalkers as it has been a whole twenty minutes without them hearing that one guys name over the PA. Kahne takes the lead from the start and leads the distance as Saldana and Dollansky use the time for a test session checking low and high grooves.
First Behling B Feature (12 Laps) 1. Brooke Tatnell [1]; 2. Steve Meyer [4]; 3. Billy Warren [5]; 4. Kirk Fehrman [8]; 5. Scott Uttech [2]; 6. Bill Wirth [3]; 7. Dave Uttech [6]; 8. Mark Wernes Jr. [9]; 9. Russel Borland [7].
Transferring four in another rare move to accommodate the guests. Tatnell into the immediate lead and the distance without much challenge. Yellow is out on the 3rd lap after Borland busts a 360 spin through turns 3-4 and keeps it fired. Tatnell, Meyer, S. Uttech, Wirth, Fehrman and D. Uttech to the restart until Scott U. was busted for delivering to the cone a beat down. Fehrman handed the transfer spot for a restart which Dave takes it for a moment entering turn 3. Warren takes the 3rd spot past half-way then everyone runs down low for the closing laps.
Second B Feature 1. Joe Symoens [4]; 2. Todd Hepfner [3]; 3. Kris Spitz [5]; 4. Adam Miller [7]; 5. Billy Balog [1]; 6. Phillip Mock [6]; 7. Brandon Thone [8]; 8. Cainen Riemann [9]. DNF-Lance Fassbender [2].
Point leading Balog and MSA point leader, Fassbender lead the bandage brigade of guys who had issues in Heats- Which continued as Fassbender spins low in turns 1-2 collecting Hepfner. Fassbender was done for the night to begin the 2nd lap. Balog sputters and slows on the restart falling deep into the field, handing the lead over to Symoens and the transfers to Spitz, Mock and Miller. Hepfner was able to restart from his deal and was in the 5th spot by the end of the lap which the Yellow is then out after Balog slowed to a stop down the backstretch infield. Into-and-back-out-of the work area for the defending champ to tag the tail. Hepfner makes quick work of a couple competitors and holds the 2nd spot within two laps of the restart. With two-to-go, Balog is in jeopardy running the high line in 5th out of the transfer. Blanket finish at the Checkers behind Hepfner between Spitz, Miller and seemingly odd man out-Balog along with the slower car of Riemann. Balog will start the Feature-guarantee that.
Joey Saldana wins his 2nd career IRA A Feature.
A Feature (30 Laps) 1. Joey Saldana [6] $2,500; 2. Mike Reinke [4]; 3. Craig Dollansky [9]; 4. Brooke Tatnell [11]; 5. Kasey Kahne [8]; 6. Billy Balog; 7. Billy Warren [20]; 8. Donny Goeden [3]; 9. Billy Hafemann [12]; 10. Jereme Schroeder [17]; 11. Joe Symoens [13]; 12. Adam Miller [22]; 13. Scott Uttech; 14. Mike Kertscher [10]; 15. Darrell Dodd [15]; 16. Scott Biertzer [1]; 17. Kirk Fehrman [23]; 18. Steve Meyer [19]; 19. Kris Spitz [20]; DNF-20. TJ Luedke [16]; DNF-21. Scotty Neitzel [5]; DNF-22. Todd Hepfner [18]; DNF-23. Andy Hunt [14]; DNF-24. John Haeni [7]. DNS-Wayne Modjeski. DNS-Matt VanDerVere.
VanDerVere does not make the call and Balog is able to make the start. Modjeski ducks into the work area shortly after push-off and is done for the night-he would have started 2nd. Uttech waiting in the wings tags the field now. Initial start is called back after Haeni trips down low in turn 2 upside down and gets tagged by Dollansky. Haeni was Ok and a quick confirmation into the work area ends his night. Fehrman also into the work area and back out. Dollansky with slight top wing damage nothing serious. Biertzer leads the field out of turn 2 using the high line over Reinke, Goeden, Saldana, Kahne, Neitzel and Dollansky. By the 5th lap, Saldana takes control of the race out of turn 4. The Yellow is out on the 7th lap after Fehrman spins/stalls in turns 3-4. Saldana, Goeden, Reinke, Kahne, Dollansky, Biertzer, Tatnell, Hafemann to the restart which is soon halted after contact between Biertzer and Dodd causes a chain reaction behind them to scatter sending Hepfner into the wall and Hunt upside down. All drivers are Ok with Hepfner and Hunt done for the night. The Red is extended to allow fuel. With a couple of laps of the restart, the top ten is split running two distinct grooves with Saldana, Reinke, Kahne, Tatnell running inches off the wall while Goeden, Dollansky, Hafemann, Neitzel, Warren run down low. Saldana catches the tail end of the field around the 13th lap when the Yellow is out after Luedke and Meyer tangle on the berm low in turn 2. Neitzel had ducked into the infield under competition moments ago, done for the night. Saldana with the lapped car of Uttech sammiched ahead of Goeden then Reinke, Dollansky, Kahne, Tatnell, Hafemann, Warren, Kertscher and from the tail-Balog to the restart. Reinke quickly into the 2nd spot using his as always high line. Lap-15 saw Dollansky take the 3rd spot down low as Luedke calls it a night. Saldana back into traffic around the 18th lap, which is mostly down low he only sees them for a moment down straights as Balog is now secure in the Top-10. Longest Green flag run of the night and by the 21st lap, Saldana has all slower traffic down low picking them off one-by-one. The Yellow is out on the 24th lap after Kertscher is stalled low in turn 1. Saldana with a comfortable multi-lapped car buffer of Miller, Dodd, Biertzer, Fehrman and Meyer ahead of second running Reinke, Dollansky (Uttech), Tatnell, Hafemann, Kahne, Goeden, Warren, Schroeder, Symoens to the final what was a ragged restart. The slower cars seemed to oblige and all ducked to the low line, allowing the lead pack cars to run freely on the high line with Reinke leading the charge for the locals over the high profile guests maintaining runner-up honors after bouncing the right side of the car off the turn 3-4 wall several times. Balog with complete redemption coming from the tail into a very respectable 6th spot avoiding all the incidents using the high line for the entire run.
Joey thanks his car owner for the trickle down sponsorship to aide in his own racing career and felt the IRA gave a decent battle during the night. Next IRA Race--This Saturday at Wilmot with an invite to the Midwest All Stars to compete.
