Garrett Hansen Captures Gold in “California Midget Clash” at Hanford
By Robert Haugh

Manning the Andy Bondio #47 Bondio/Barnes Chevy, Manhattan Beach’s Garrett Hansen cruised to the Bay Cities Racing Association/USAC-Western States co-sanctioned “California Midget Clash” victory at King’s Speedway in Hanford on Saturday, May 16th.

After passing early-race leader Randi Pankratz on Lap 4, Hansen never looked back, wheeling his way to victory on the smooth and fast 3/8-mile King’s Speedway.

Two-time USAC Silver Crown champion Bud Kaeding, who was running fifth after charging from the rear after an early-race spin, brought out the final caution on Lap 29 after flipping the Mike Sala #79 Spike/Bob Wirth Mopar in turn 2. Officials unfurled dual checkers and red flags, halting the race under caution.

Following Hansen to the checkers were two-time (2000, 2004) Chili Bowl champion Cory Kruseman in his own #17k Spike/Mopar, Blake Miller aboard the Priestly #7r, 4-time USAC-WS champion and multiple-time BCRA feature winner Robby Flock aboard Mike Sala’s #19 Spike/Bob Wirth Chevy and 2007 BCRA champion Justin Grant aboard the Dave Thurston #17 racingforthetroops.com Spike/Esslinger rounding out the top five.

Randi Pankratz aboard her #8 AutoResearch/Esslinger, 21st-starting hardcharger David Prickett in the Neverlift Motorsports #15 TCR/Van Dyne, fast-timer Shannon McQueen in her #7 Spike/Esslinger, Kody Swanson in the Team 6R/TK Spike/Esslinger and Austin Mero in the Kruseman #14k Spike/Esslinger claiming sixth through tenth, with Kaeding scored in 11th.

Having forged ahead from the drop of the green flag, Kruseman methodically worked his way up from his twelfth starting spot, moving up to sixth on lap 2 and advancing into the Top five on lap 7. Kruseman vaulted into the fourth position on Lap 10 --- picking up third on lap 12, and then began chasing down leader Hansen and second-place Blake Miller, finally overtaking Miller for second on lap 27, quickly running out of tiem to surpass Hansen.

Grant and Flock were also working their way up from their 13th and 14th starting spots respectively, advancing up to 8th and ninth respectively on lap 2. Flock passed Grant while they were on the move, with Flock breaking into the Top five in fifth and Grant in sixth on Lap 12. Flock moved into fourth on Lap 14 with Grant moving into fifth on Lap 17. Flock took fourth with Grant taking fifth at the checkers.

Alex Schutte unfurled the first caution of the feature when he spun in Turn 3 on the opening lap in the Kruseman #12k Spike/Mopar. Kody Swanson, Ricky Shelton and Bud Kaeding spun together in Turn 3 on Lap 2, sending all three to the rear of the pack. Shelton spun again on Lap, forcing him to retire because of the two-spin rule.

Fast-timer Shannon McQueen brought out a caution on Lap 12, when she spun in turn 3. McQueen rebounded, finishing eighth.

Kody Swanson claimed the Semi over Matt Mitchell, Austin Mero in the Kruseman #14k Spike/Mopar, Joey Fabozzi in his #84 Spike/Mopar and Bakersfield’s Wink Schweitzer aboard his #60.

Hansen claimed the Trophy Dash over Kaeding, Kody Swanson and Shelton.

Visalia’s Greg Bragg claimed Heat 1 aboard Dave LaMott’s #0 Stealth/Bob Wirth Honda over Schutte, Pankratz, McQueen and Miller.

Flock claimed Heat 2 over Hansen, Wes Gutierrez aboard the Walker Racing/Bay Muffler #10x Stealth/Esslinger, Jake Swanson aboard the Swanson #05 Stealth/Honda and Prickett.

Grant claimed Heat 3 over Kruseman, Shelton aboard the McQueen #75 Spike/Esslinger, Kaeding and Colorado’s Bob Harr aboard his own #2.

McQueen topped the stellar 27-car field in qualifying, with a time of 16.352.

Notes: • During Hot Laps and the feature, Greg Bragg and Jake Swanson battled in Honda-powered Midgets --- quite possibly the first time in Midget racing that there were two Hondas competing in the same race.

• Prickett, who had a spark plug go bad in qualifying, replaced the plug and drove to fifth in Heat 2 from the back, then to a 7th place Main event finish.

• Reigning BCRA champion and current 2009 BCRA Midget points leader “Young Lion” Nick Foster was battling fuel flow problems, struggling to keep up, with the villain possibly a bad fuel pump.

• Pete Davis shredded a timing belt in hot laps and was done for the evening.

• Kody Swanson and Scott Pierovich were involved in an incident in Turn 2 during Heat 2, with Pierovich flipping and retiring for repairs. Pierovich exited the Semi on lap 11, stalling at the top of Turn 4 with mechanical gremlins. Viktor Sinzig retired from the Semi early with mechanical woes in the Walker Racing/Bay Muffler #10x Stealth/Esslinger.

• 2008 BCRA pavement Midget champion and Midget rookie-of-the-year “Nitro” Nick Chivello battled poor handling during Heat 2, so Steve Roza recommended some set up changes, with Chivello much stronger in the feature aboard the Bob Roza Team F.A.ST. (Fighting Against Steroids Together) #20 Beast/Esslinger, with Chivello starting 19th in the Main, working his way up to 7th by lap 13, however, upon developing a push, Chivello dropped back, finishing 11th.

Foster continues leading the 2009 BCRA Midget point standings over Prickett and seven-time BCRA champion “Ageless Wonder” Floyd Alvis.

The BCRA Midgets continue their 66th season of racing at the ¼-mile Placerville Speedway at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 30. Visit www.bcraracing.com for additional information on the BCRA Midgets.

Congrates Garrett! It was good to see you have great run at a track that has bit you a few times. Jake and I really enjoyed make our debut run there. Hope you guys had as much fun running with him as he did with you guys. He hasn't had a smile that big since he ran your Lt AA Quarter Midget. See ya a Ventura. Thanks Chris
