actually friday night sucked. typical lanny track - way too heavy. in his defense though they had a lot of rain. But the show they put on tonight was worth the whole weekend.
And by the way - it wasnt Jason Johnson that put on the driving clinic.......
it was Joe Wood Jr. Jason Johnson will look at that video on May 9th and be damn glad of whatever went wrong with Joe Wood Jr. did. Jr. was up to 4th and threating Jason Johnson for 3rd when something went wrong - think it was tire. Joe Wood Jr. then tags the rear of the field - with the laps waning down - and again - put the clinic back on. racing back up to 7th. Making short work - extremely short work - of guys like Danny Wood, Paul McMahon, etc. etc. (even Gary Wright) - was a heck of a sight to see. He was even faster I thought coming back through the field.
Hopefully when everyone sees it on Versus on May 9th - they will see what I mean - Joe Wood Jr. could well have been threating for the lead by the end. He put on the most impressive driving performance of the whole weekend - all the natives around us thought so too.
As for your last question. i think we are screwed. Lookin at the field this weekend - all but about 5-6 would be there - plus we would gain a few more from OKC and maybe Kansas - so at least 60 looked likely. not sure bout some of that now.
Unless weather.com is playing an ugly trick - looks like a hellacious cold front will move through friday - with a high in the low 50's and the wind beaming out of the north (its gonna be nasty cold) - and saturday will be better - but still cold. now those of us who will still go sit through frigid temps can only hope that the cold wont discourage any race teams (after all - they are in driving suits lol). But Lanny's gonna be one pissed off dude. His profit is gonna take a HUGE - I mean - HUGE hit.
Half the grandstand just went away if the nasty forecast i saw holds true to form. With what he charges pits and admission - I dont think he'll lose his ass - but if its gonna be that cold - his profit will shrink bout 80%. How ironic - lovely weekends in January/February.........but yet the 2 coldest weekends of the year (up till after next weekend) will be when State Fair Speedway had shows scheduled. that really sucks.
I know with who all was there this weekend. And knowing, Danny, Whit, and others will run the ASCS next weekend - Anything less than 60 (well maybe upper 50's) will be damn disappointing.
Sorry to be the naysayer. I hope like all hell the forecast improves with no cold front in sight - and I'll eat a few crows. Its just gonna suck if we have the best race of the year get ruined due to weather. You just dont see fields like what we saw in devils bowl down here in this region. This would/will be the best show of the year at SFS HANDS DOWN (on paper anyways) - we wont have another driver lineup like it. And seeing the same 60+ sprints - but with some actually decent support classes (like 20 sumthin everything lol)......would be nice. the mods down at the bowl were extremely disappointing - which i guess is the norm nowadays.
It aint just rain i hope doesnt screw us up. I hope a damn strong arctic cold front can lay off too. I;m gonna be pissed if the best race of the year at SFS gets a peg knocked out from under it. It would be disheartening. even more so for those that didnt get to see the bad ass race tonight at the bowl.
sorry fot the rambles - not trying to piss anyone off. just adamantly delivering my thoughts. i'll be eyeballin the weather every hour for the next 2 days just hoping the extended forecast is not very reliable.
