The time change really screwed me up, especially with me getting up at 3 AM for work. With that said, Mike Howard has sent me a buttload full of pictures from practice day at SFS and I will have them posted on my image gallery asap.

In the meantime, here is Danny Jennings new look and number for the 2009 race season. I say it looks really sharp! Photo courtesy of Mike Howard.

Great looking car, and it photographs nicely. However, it brings up a historical question. When was the last time a super sprint (or super mod) number 1 had a really good year? Aaron Madden? Being senile, I'm probably forgetting someone, but I can't recall that number doing particularly well in the past 15 years or so. Hope Danny can start a new trend with division champs carrying the number and doing well with it. It also helps the confusion with #61....a few more Jennings and we'd have run out of the alphabet.

Chris Burns won 2 championships in the champ sprints using the number 1. I can't really think of a Super Sprint that has run the number.

If I recall correctly (probably not) Mike Peters was aboard Charlie Ochs #1x in 1983 and was leading points when he broke his arm the night before the start of the USAC/NCRA challenge.

Tony Poe ran number one for a while, I recall, and I think Piekert gave it a few rides on the half mile. There may have been a few visitors who ran it, like a guy from Kansas whose name escapes me (was it Park?) but that's all I can remember. I know some people consider it unlucky, but probably the reason most SFS champs didn't run it was because they had a "traditional" number....or they didn't want to repaint the car or spring for new tee shirts. Now back to the REAL Great American Race....the Iditarod.

I think it was Park - but I also think Park may have run at the same times Tony Poe did too - and for some reason I seem to recall him puttin a 0 on it too. to make it 10. or maybe it was just an x. not reallys ure - thats been a long time ago.
I keep trying to think of all who have run that number. someone out of tulsa ran it i remember....may have been Crawford. what number did Howie Sewell run? was it a 1? did wayne johnson ever run a 1?
I keep remembering/seeing this car that was a #1 and then had this thing next to it - that looked like a funny shaped N. wanting to say it was white car with red number. did Charlie Kammerzell (sp?) run a 1?
just taking a stab at it.....i know most of ya'll remember this much better than me. i only remember late 90's to now for the most part. before that - in the 80's - it was annoying my parents and passing out by the 2nd A Feature (B Mains were alive and healthy back then) and then it was hangin out at the top of the grandstand - throwing starburst wrappers at my brother and cousin. life a lot simpler back then lol. good memories. the funny thing is throughout all of it........from early 80's all the way till now - I still heckle James Lenhart all the time lol. Its very possible I been asking him for a couple decades how many cars are signed in.....I damn sure done it for the last 10 lol. geez - dating back to then - I've probably witnessed him winning 50/50 or something --- like 3 dozen times. guess over a 26 year span that is not as impressive as I previously thought lol. better than most tho, better than most.
How much would could a wouldchuck chuck if a

I remember Herb Copeland ran Lavern Nances' 1n car. Here's a shot of George Armstrong from the 1976 or 77 NCRA at SFS.

George Armstrong ran a number one in the '70s but your picture ain't it. That is Charlie and Charlene Sumner's 1c from the mid-'80s. Can't remember all the drivers behind the wheel of that machine but "Booger Red" Bob Waller was always fun.

Dad ran for Sumner a few times. Tony Poe and Dennis Parks ran #1. The 1 with the funny N next to it was probably the Nance house car. It was quite popular back in the day as a lot of drivers drove it.

Forgot about your dad behind the wheel of that car. The Sumners were really nice folks. They always treated me well. Ooh, just remembered another of their drivers...Johnny Pickle!
