I had/still have old t-shirts taking up space. I discovered a neighbor lady that makes quilts. She made this for me:

Rustyr,...That is a real net project. I have something different. It is a car I built trying to replicate an Excalibur. I planned it for several years intending to use a Chevy Nova stub frame & power train, M body and a grill from a late 30s International truck. I spotted the International along I35 near Perry, Oklahoma. I found a 78 Excalibur & got the drill, radiator & spare tire covers. A car builder in California built some cars with the Midget body, Lincoln Cont grill & T Bird frame. I got the frame plans from him & used a Mercury Cougar.

Looks like more effort than building a sprint car. Did you get a salvage yard body? Did you build it in Florida? Do you still have it? Definitely a nice piece, with alot of work in it.

This is where all my race car money went to in the '90s. Part of it anyways.

It took 364 days to deliver this truck from the field it was in complete with a tree growing through it to my Dads front drive. For some reason everybody liked the old paint! Patina was in before I knew it.

It was a lot more work than building a sprint car. I always liked the Excalibur after they came out with the 80 model with the long front fenders. You could call this my, Poor Man's Excalibur. It had parts from something like 12 different cars. A 1976 MG Midget body (from the KCMO Police salvage yard), 89 Mercury Cougar frame, 76 Chevy Nova 305 with automatic trns, 81 Excalibur front fenders, 36 Ford pickup rear fenders (from a fiberglass shop in Beloit, KS) , 76 Olds Tornado tele-tilt steering, wiring harness from the Nova & Tornado meshed together so the ignition switch starter would work. I went to the local library, copied diagrams of both wiring systems, drew my own set for the car then rewired the harness. It worked. A Ford Model A luggage rack from J C Whitney. I made the hood, side panels , front & rear bumpers & dash. The dash was walnut from a cabinet shop cut out to fit. I removed the MG rear taiights & welded in 3" flex tubing. Finished in fiberglass. The tailights are Olds Cutlass teardrop side mirrors with boat trailer lights molded in. Front fender lights are VW. I also made the headlight bar. The hood has a hinge down the middle from a horse trailer door. I used a power brake unit from a Ford Fairlane as it was the only one small enough to clear under the hood.

I lived in Olathe (I was PM there from 1980 until I retired in 1998) when I built the car. I finished it & titled it in Jan 1991.

Everything I've seen from your work is cool! You've always seemed to have that "touch". And the fact that they run too is even better.

Luther

Sure a work of art. Don't know if I got a long enough attention span to do a project like that. Lots of details in that kind of project, and as they say, that is where the devil is. Just wondering if those rear fenders came from Mankato instead of Beloit. Mankato is north of Beloit on 36 highway, and years ago there was a fiberglass place there that did alot of car bodies and parts. They folded long ago, but I think there is still some molds laying in the weeds.

Did you keep the car when you went south? Would make a great way to cruise the beach...a real babe magnet. LOL

Rustyrail, You were right on the fenders. They were made in Mankato.....It was a lot of work. I had to mount the radiator first as low as I could set it, then line the body with the frame & top of the cowl to the top of the radiator. I mounted the engine & trans first as they were set back 12 inches from the Couger mounts. Everything I did caused something else to change. I had to cut the bottom coil off the front springs. The frame stuck out back of the body about 10 inches so I made a cover for then added a luggage rack to balance that area. I even cut the side rails out of the frame (the part that bows out) & replaced that with 3 X 5 tubing ..It was worth it as the car came out like I planned.....Luther

The dirt track influence and Indy influence has been making it's rounds through the high-end rod shops for years, these days it seems they are in bloom-

Based on the Barney Oldfield racer from early last century,
