This is the John Siroonian "Western Mag Special". This car has time and time again been selected as the best looking sprint car to ever sit on a race track. Drivers have included Jimmy Boyd (pictured), Leland McSpadden and Ron Shuman just to name a few.
This pic was taken at Ascot Park. The car to the outside with the orange helmet on the hood is the #98jr owned by J.C. Agajanian. The driver of the car that day..............Shane Carson.

I was at Ascot for the Pacific Coast Nationals in '86 & '87.
Tough to remember, but I believe Brad Doty won it one of those years. In the Marks/Kepler Coors Light Silver Bullet #18. Still have T-shirts that I bought from there. Can't wear them anymore,(20 years ago I could wear a medium t-shirt)....
Ascot was the coolest track I have ever been to. Everything about it was great, from the palm trees in the infield to the old double decker bus outside turn 1. The food was great and the 'slick track' go-cart track was a blast. People would get to the track parkin lot 4 hours before the races , tailgate ,talk racin' watch the tow rigs come in .
My uncle & his friends would drive from San Bernadino to Gardena every Sat night CRA was there or road trip & watch them all up & down the west coast.

Never made it to Ascot, which I regret. Thanksgiving of 97' I did spend 10 days in Long Beach, though & made 2 fantastic races.
Got to do the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura on dirt! Best I remember 60+ cars, Tony Stewart & Billy Boat were both there. What a great race.
Then I got to do Perris at the 1/2 mile, this was the night Ron Shuman won the championship on the last lap!
Of course being raised here with our non wing supers & champ dirt cars, yeah ya gotta love the wingless stuff.
JMO, but the best race at SFS this year was the TNT series in August.

When I was a kid, we lived in California for a few years. Dad took us all out to Ascot one night to see some races, this had to be in the late 60's or early 70's, but even then it was a very class operation and great track. Seems like they even ran some figure 8 races that night ( I may be confusing tracks, gosh that was SOOOO long ago). Figure 8 guys are insane, btw.

From what I heard, they tried a little of everything at Ascot. Rick Mears was discovered partly when he was driving "sprint buggies"(dune buggy precursor to stadium racing?).
The famous Ascot clay was taken from a graveyard across the street. The topsoil in that area is all clay until you get down 6 feet+. The cemetary had no place to put the excessive clay, so Ascot gladly took a load every time someone was laid to rest.

I grew up in SoCal listening to the Ascot commercials on the radio. I never got to go until I was in high school. Two of the most striking memories I have is that there were palm trees in the infield, and it was directly across the street from a cemetary.
My daughter Sara was born 2/16/89. she went to her first sprint car races, at Ascot, when she was 8 days old. She doesn't remember anything........
It was a pretty sad deal when the track closed and they tore everything out. The property sat vacant for the longest time.
The guard rails and light poles were sold to the folks at Tucson Raceway Park in the early 90's.

Mark Norwood's dad use to race at Ascot.

One of the things I love about discussions of the "old days" is the way we find out what a small world it REALLY is and how much we ALL have in common. Never knew you were from SoCal Bucky. Looks like we were probably "neighbors", well sort-of.

Ascot remains the best racetrack I've ever attended. Big ol', fast half-mile. Seemingly always tacky. The absolute best concession stand food (Manzy not included). Lots of friendly people. Getting "fogged out" at the Pacific Coast Nationals in '90 is still one of my most memorable racing moments. You gotta ask why......

Race track burritos were invented at Ascot I believe.
I remember how the grandstands wrapped around turn 1 & it was an awesome sight to see the sprinters set up & throw it sideways, backin it in thru turn 1...
