According to the IMCA website there are some new rules for Sportmods. It says that you can use any dished or flat top pistons. So now you can use forged pistons. They also changed the intake rule so that you can now use an Eldebrock intake. You now can use an OEM steel crankshaft and rods. You can use any hydraulic camshaft as long as it can pull 12 inches of vaccuum. Go to www.imca.com and read the 2009 rules for Southern Sportmods

these are really good rule changes, now everyone will be equal with the gentlemen that have been racing the 10,000.00 mopar engines in texas...lol
Seriously, I don't think these rules hurt the class at all and just hope that this class stays what it is right now. Best class out there when it comes to competion per dollar spent!!! JMO

The problem is every ones Rules are different and IMCA is making rule changes every year.
Last year it was tube A-arms, after market heads and alum. Intakes this year light weight pistons, stronger cranks and rods. What will next year bring? 9" Floater rearends? Aftermarket controle arms? Panhard bars?
I just wish they would leave the rules alone lock them in for 5years or something

I agree with you Perry. The class has been growing by leaps and bounds. Why try to mess it up. At the beginning of 2008 you could buy a competitive Jeffs motor for around 2500.00 now a competitive Jeffs motor runs around 6500.00. Whats next a 10000.00 motor and we are running for 200 to 400 to win. The one thing I like that IMCA has is a motor claim

couldn't agree more... they need to lock in the rules for at least 5 years!
This class is awesome and they are going to let it get out of hand, just like modifieds...
See everyone at the races....

I agree they should leave the class alone for 5 years. We got into this because it was the first class out that a guy could race around for some great money and fun.
Look foward to next season.

don't know if paul white is running a $10,000.00 mopar or not, I do know he is running a mopar. Anyways, I was talking about a couple of drivers that I met earlier this year. They were bad fast mopars, that passed tech, both drivers told me that the motors cost them around $10,000.00.

As we all know racers are their own worst enemy. Rules, that are simple and easily checked are what this class started with and they are already too many changes in them. I understand what IMCA and NCRA is trying to do, but any competent professional engine builder has them beat right now. Same way with the chassis builders. I guess we'll probably stay with the open mod its already run what you brung except for aluminium heads and they are on the horizon. Hey Santa all I want for Christmas is heads, a great shock package and new tires every race. That ought to get us started!!

you are correct, for there are some series that already run the alum.heads on the modifieds.
Here is the scary part, if IMCA would leave this class alone, you could and would have record numbers at all the tracks! I cant even imagine what kind of numbers for a big show(that pays back well) probably over 100 cars though.
This is the best class of competition as far as bang for the buck and when the whole country is in tough economic times this will be the class the racers will turn to...

yea paul is runin a mopar but it cost bout half what the chevy guys around here are runing. Remember the only way a mopar cost more is if you run aftermarket parts and in a class were you couldnt before its cheaper to run a mopar.
