Sprint car cage nets were invented during this time. The Vogler crash spurred the idea, but the Vukovich wreck just drove it home. This was in the fall of '90. Some good did come out of it. These two died much like Joe Weatherly did in '64.

Given another chance these guys would have tried again, all the while trying to beat the odds even if they knew better.

You could show them a picture of what was to happen. They would take it into consideration as they strapped in for another round.

The parents carry their guilt for a while or maybe forever. Yet just as some went to prove themselves in the great wars history has recorded, these chose the battlefield of a bullring. Some even both.

They make no apologies as they go in, they just hope you understand if they don't come back. Good safety is hard to argue with, even if it is a wing.

How did you find that article Warren? You amaze me. It was so weird reading it almost twenty years after it was written and remembering some of the guys we've lost since. Adam Petty, both Voglers and Scott Kalitta come to mind, but I'm sure there are many other families who have suffered this tragedy. A very touching article.

search on James McElreath

Motorsports Memorial link below was really interesting to read about some of the wrecks in detail. Found that in another search for James McElreath.

Got me started on James when I seen a photo on another forum with James on the pole at Eldora. I thought that was his first USAC win, that's why I was searching on James.

Man that's a great article, I knew James raced against and traveled some of the same tracks, he was a good guy kinda quiet but one heck of a driver. You can still find Jim most any Saturday night at the Devils Bowl in Mesquite Texas where James cut his teeth in racing.
