I have a question for you forum members. Can you check a race seat on an airplane? The racers that fly and drive misc cars have to have done this. We are going to be making a trip and would like to bring a used butler seat home with us if this is possible. We will be flying American airlines midwest to west coast. I would call the airline and ask but they would have no clue what I was talking about.

I am an Aircraft Tech for United Airlines, ---- YES you can you are going to have to put it in the cargo bin though you cant carry it on it is too big.  Just check it like you woulf luggage and you will have no problems.

Hope this helps you out and good luck

Thank you for the feedback. So I can just tag it and check it? No need to bubble wrap or wrap it in cardboard?

Tim Shaffer has a neat solution for this.  He has a seat with roller blade wheels on the bottom so the seat is rolling luggage.  He straps his duffel bag into the seat and voila, his seat and bag are one peice of checked baggage.  He explained this when I spotted the seat bolted into the Beef Packers car with the roller blade wheels still attached, and inquired why the seat had wheels.

Thats brilliant

Reminds me of another story, SLIGHTLY off topic. I picked up a guy hitch hiking (back when people still did that) carrying a 5 gallon gas can. As soon as he got in the car, he said "I have to show you this, cause sometimes people get mad at me for tricking them". He showed me the false bottom in the gas can, which held all his stuff... I thought it was ingenious & took him as far as I could...

Good idea.  In addition, and hopefully it never happens, but if he ever needs to be extracted from the car with the seat attached, he can be rolled to the ambulance.

Ran into Kraig Kinser at the airport once. He had his seat wrapped in plastic if I remember correctly. The couple in front of me joked, "I'd hate to see the baby that fits in that car seat"! Got to talk a bit with Kraig, really cool dude.

I will say having flown with oversized hockey bags and sticks, generally oversized items don't come down the conveyor belt at the baggage claim.  There is usually a desk or door where oversized items are brought out.  But it depends on the airport.

Make sure to mark the seat with all your contact info in addition to the tag..... Bubble wrap or shrink wrap the shit out of it, especially if you're putting stuff inside the seat... And pack the upholstery in a suitcase or something seperate from the seat.... BTW, you can ship seats cheaply through Greyhound if you ever find yourself buying one from out of state.... The only draw back is it takes a little longer and you've got to deliver it and pick it up from the bus station on both ends.....

Flying with the seat was very easy. We left Indianapolis on American Airlines and checked it just like a suitcase for $30.00. Being indianapolis of cource made this easy as the lady in the baggage check area said that she sees them often. We put the upholstry in our normal lugggage and tagged the seat multiple times for safety. It was simple and arrived with no issues.
