Last night I went to see the Outlaws at Grays Harbor for the first time and I was definitely impressed with the racing. It's a great facility and the track is very racy. I was glad to see Pittman win and the racing behind him in the top 5 was very good. I was not impressed with the car count, however. Only 17 cars showed up. It looks like Skagit only had 20 or so. Tomorrow I'm headed to Willamette Speedway for the race there. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know if the car count is likely to be any better? Are there any California cars planning on coming up as a warmup for the Gold Cup this weekend? Rico, maybe? I know that last year Larson and Rico were both there. I sure hope we see some more cars.

Was terribly disappointing. I've been hitting the Outlaw shows at Skagit for quite a few years. Pretty sure Rico and many other California drivers were there the past few years. Only guy I saw this year was Kaeding. Not sure why. Maye a conflict with another race down in California? Louie Classic? I saw Dominic Scelzi won there this weekend. Sort of surprised he wasn't up north.

Washington usually got a full field or close. I remember there were a few locals from Oregon RAcing at Willamette and a few Washington guys who would follow the tour around the area that week to add to the count.

This year however the car counts have fallen off a cliff so I’m not sure I have high hopes.

I didn't think about the Louie Classic. That makes sense. Skagit and Grays Harbor are a long haul when they could race much closer at Calistoga. It's really unfortunate that the scheduling worked out that way this year. I doubt they will come up to Oregon for one race only, either.

Please explain this qualifier. I saw that a few races ago also. Is it just more for the fans cause there are so few heats and no B? Does it decide the starting grid from the dash back straight up?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Grove - 17 cars

WoO - 17 cars

Coincidence? I don't think so. It's late in the season. Teams are saving what money and equipment they have left for the remaining big shows.

I may be wrong.....again.......but, perhaps with a few exceptions, car counts historically drop after Knoxville/ mid-August.

Speaking of Knoxville - is it "the Knoxville effect"? A lot of teams go there for a week and spend a whole bunch of money getting there, staying there, and getting home.

Time of year does not matter for the Washington and Oregon races. Unless a bunch of additional guys chase the series, WoO races in the Pacific Northwest are not going to draw many cars. There are very few local teams that run a 410. The number of California teams with a 410 program has shrunk dramatically in recent years, and most of the remaining California racers seldom leave the state.

Last night's race at Willamette Speedway was really a letdown. The field was small as we had expected, but the big problem was the track. It was not good. It was fast, but one lane around the top with almost no passing. In fact, the last few sprint car races I have seen there have not been that good and have largely featured a one lane track with little passing. Last night the ISCS feature was actually better than the WoO feature as far as action goes. I think that I'll skip the race at Willamette next year and instead make the trek to Grays Harbor. It's a much better track for sprint cars.

On the plus side, my friend and I got there early and found a shady spot under some trees, had a few beers and played Allen's Dirt, the Game. The racing on the board was better than the racing on the track.

When the track is prepared right it is a good sprint car track.  Cottage Grove(why the hell the Outlaws dont run there anymore is beyond me) is a much better track for sprints and Outlaw show there was always fun.  IMO of course

I still appreciated the spectacle. As an OR resident there aren't many chances to see real big boy 410 racing. Still, yes, the low car counts this year for this swing were a bummer, and the track was one lane. Willamette is frankly usually that way in my experience, but some years the WoO track prep has been better. Gravel was clearly faster than Sweet for most of the race, but had to fight like hell to get one chance, and then Sweet managed to get the best of him with a bold move. I still enjoyed the suspense of that battle and the sheer speed.

But it sure made me wish we got treated to the kind of 410 shows certain other parts of the country experience regularly.
