It's a shame.  I was staying at the KOA in Rapid City a couple of years ago.  One night I took a drive and found the speedway less than a mile away.  It really looks like it has the potential to be a great venue.  However, I looked on their website.  All classes (and there are a lot of them) are struggling----most with under 10 cars.  Were they shut down for a while and are just trying to get up and going again?  Or, has this been what they've been dealing with year after year as far as car counts?  The area has enought population to support a racetrack so hopefully they can get the cars and keep it going.

Well I cant speak to anything I have not witnessed personally or spent 18 hours researching, hell i cant even speak most of the time by here is a thot. Our local race tracks the ones I can attend regularily close to my home where Iive, the ones i don't have to read about or ask questions about, you know the kind...

The area has enough racers to support the tracks but they let every driver with a new desire to start a new class. If they would stick with an entry level and build one or 2 more classes above that for drivers who want more and can handle more, they would have decent counts in all classes. They may loose the odd driver cause he cant race a 4 cyl but most would just get a car that has a class so they can race.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

I grew up in Rapid City. BHS has struggled for cars going back as far as 1973. There isn't as much of a pupulation base around there as you'd think. The surrounding countryside amounts to a lot of nothing.

I'm not doubting you. But draw a circle around Rapid to about 75 miles out- a drive of up to an ahour and a half. The cities you'd hit are Sturgis, Spearfish, Belle Fourche and, that's about it. Compare that to the population around Sioux Falls, or around Knoxville.

In the 70's, BHS would always have a big write-up in the paper with results. They would also tell the paid attendance figures. It usually hovered around 2800 people per week. They drew cars from as far away as Pierre, Gillette and Denver. But other than a special, end of the year race, I never saw a time where there was more than 2 heat races in any class.

You're right, it would be a little misleading.  I am used to towns with much smaller populations than Rapid City supporting tracks.  BUT, the population surrounding those towns is probably, as a whole, much greater.  Anyways, seems like it has the potential to be a great place.

Murphy---you say they struggled since the 70's.  Has it run continuously since then?  I seem to remember hearing it was shut down for a year or two?  Did I dream that?

I believe it was shut down for a while a couple years back over some contract dispute or something. I live at the other end of the state so I don't follow the west river racing scene.
