Yesterday's ISCS race at Willamette Speedway was suddenly cancelled and moved to Cottage Grove Speedway. It turns out that Willamette Speedway has had numerous code violations with the county and has been shut down until they are all corrected. This is really bad news since the Outlaws are planning to visit the track on September 4. It is a real blow for Oregon sprint car fans as the closest remaining tracks the Outlaws run at are Skagit, Grays Harbor and Silver Dollar Speedway, all of which are a pretty long haul. For those who have not been to Willamette Speedway, it's a great little track and one of the best for sprint cars in the Northwest. Let's hope that everything gets sorted out really soon and the track reopens. As for me, I was on the fence about driving to Grays Harbor on September 2, but now that decision has been made much easier.

They need to get the Outlaws back to Cottage Grove.  Was always a fun show.

Cottage Grove is a better track than Willamette. Regardless it sucks to see a track close because of government bureaucracy.

I don't know the issue obviously. It may be bureaucracy. Maybe it isnt. On the east coast we have people saying things need to be fixed before they race anymore but they just race more without fixing. On the west coast someone said fix it before you race and they have enough power to enforced it. Safety is a national concern not local.

Yes it sucks to see a track close and maybe it isnt a safety issue either.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

The most interesting thing to me in this development is that Cottage Grove ran into this same issue a number of years ago. They did quite a bit of work without permits and had to work through that process to get back on track. You would think the operators at Willamette would have known better then to mess with this stuff. It would be very ironic if Cottage Grove ends of with this event because of this issue.

Apparently the same people own Cottage Grove, Sunset Speedway and Willamette Speedway. It looks like it's a long list of violations. I honestly don't see how they can get this all corrected in less than 3 weeks.

I've never been to Cottage Grove since it's a little too long of a drive for a weekly show, although I would drive there to see the Outlaws.

An accessible family restroom? I've been to over 60 racetracks mostly in the midwest and I can't remember ever seeing one. Not that there a bad idea. But on the list of safety concerns?

It is Oregon...and while I love the state(lived there 35 plus years) alot of my friends that still live there say its gone a little crazy in certain areas.  I always liked Willamette but the Outlaws shows at Cottage Grove were really good IMO.  Hopefully they get this all sorted out.  Would be really cool to see both tracks get outlaw shows.

I thought exactly the same thing. Never in all my years of attending races at local tracks have I seen such a thing. In fact, many of the tracks I've attended could be classified as dilapidated at best and yet they continued to operate. I can see the hot water and a few other things being a problem though.

JVan - as an aside, Willamette is a great track for racing, but if you've never been to Cottage Grove you are missing out! It's a high banked, 1/4 mile bull ring that is flat out AWESOME for sprint car racing (much better than Willamette, in my humble, super biased, opinion), although the facilities leave a lot to be desired.

If I go to a track and it's junk I write it off and don't go back.  I'm six hours from Knoxville, about 3.5 hours from Jackson, 32 miles to Cedar Lake and a little over 50 to Ogilvie, all nice places with big special events.  Why would I want to go anywhere else?

It sounds like the country has been bending over backwards since early this year to help them get the place in compliance.  Waiving permit fees, the county couldn't treat them much better than that.  I'm not seeing a conspiracy, I'm seeing ownership that ignored the requirements of the county.  No sympathy.

Probably some difficulty with owners not wanting to spend money and the people leasing needing the changes to operate. One pays the bill while the other benefits or in this case doesnt pay the bill and forsnt benefit.

I hope this is only temporary. Willamette is one of the better dirt tracks in the northwest, and it has a rich history with stock cars. I’d hate to lose the track.

That said, I have no patience with outfits that don’t comply with health and safety regulations, especially fire codes. Those rules exist for good reason.

Great news! The track will be reopened on 8/21 and the WoO race will be held after all. When this all went down, I panicked and bought tickets to the race at Grays Harbor on the 2nd, long drive and all. Now I get to see them race twice in one week.
