Defintely a cool way to honor Greg Hodnett. Has anything like this ever occurred before? Where a track, series, or group of tracks get together and declare they will retire a number from racing?

So when an out of towner shows up in Pa with a #27 are they gonna have to change their #? Does this only apply to A rookie team from Pa. Meaning a new team can not decide to use the #27.  This isnt nascar where a team buys a #.. so the kid in go carts that's # is 27 cant carry a # he ran his entire career up into the 410 ranks? What about the 47 of Billy Kimmel or the 73 of Kramer Willimson, or the 22 of Darrel Gohn.. guess those guys were not good enough for that honor.

This compares with Nascar and the #3 after Earnhearts death, I see nothing w. rong with PA. doing this as it said in the release cars already using the 27 can keep it if they choose

Darrrel Gohns last number was #1 so no direspect to him or Billy Kimmel or Jim Campbell or Jason Lepler or Kramer all were trajic losses.

No it dont.. #s in NASCAR are bought by team owners. R.C. kept buying that # so nobody could use it.. completely not the same. So the kid in go cart using the 27 cant carry his # into the 410 ranks? Makes no sence. I think it's cool and all just dont understand the concept.

Maybe Nascar did not retire the number but Childresss changed his number right away with Kevin Harvick and did not use the number for many years the reason that its similar is Dale was the face of Nascar and Greg was the face of Pa. racing ever since Fred Rahmer retired and somewhat even before.

I'm all for it. No better way to honor a legend who was an even better person than he was a driver....and he was no doubt one of the best ever. If someone else has the number 27, put a letter beside it or just change the number. As far as I'm concerned, that's Greg's number and it belongs to him.

What they gonna tell every 27 that shows up to race in Pa they have to change their # to compete.? Hell we gonna retire the 11 when Steve passes or the 1 when Sammy goes. Hell might as well retire the 77, 12. 88, 26, 461 or 29 too..My point is he isnt the only one to have a #27.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but you are doing it in an inarticulate, hamfisted way. You may want to stop talking for a while, Champ.

Sorry if you think me saying tough shit is flexing muscles.  If ya ask me the muscle flexing came by you with your suggestion? Like you're suggestion carries weight somehow, and there's some consequence if I didn't.

Slinks, we're are you from ?  The guy was well liked by promotors and his fellow racers. They've  asked teams to change there number IF anyone wishes to carry on with the number so be it. I think it would be in poor taste, obviously you don't?  Or your just happy stirring the pot. Whichever it is. You have your right, if you were a fan of the 27 ? Show some respect for a guy that was a simble  for central pa racers.

I dunno. You might be making this harder than it has to be. When an out of towner who has lived under a rock and never heard of Greg Hodnett shows up, they just explain the situation. Then they add a letter to his number- like they do with duplicate numbers at big races. For example, if the driver is named Allen, 27a; Schuchart, 27s; Dietrich, 27d, Wolfe, 27w, Jones, 27j; etc. It all works out and the out of towner gets to learn about Greg Hodnett and his memory in Pennsylvania.

Nah, I was just being condescending, there’s a difference. My opinion on the whole deal is best summarized by former Yankees outfielder Mickey Rivers.

Rivers said, “Ain't no sense worryin' about the things you got control over, 'cause if you got control over 'em, ain't no sense worryin'. And ain't no sense worryin' about the things you don't got control over, 'cause if you don't got control over 'em, ain't no sense worryin'.”

I’m just a guy who watches the race from the stands. I don’t care if they retire one, five, or ten numbers, it doesn’t affect me.

I think this is an excellent gesture from the area to honor Greg.

I just think it's odd that a kid who may race a #27 go cart now.,moves up to 410 ranks 20 years from now . Wont be able to keep his # he may have used his entire career.  Not trying to be disrespectful at all. Guess its odd o me because it's never been done before. Other greats went before him without the same honors. I understand completely why the Team owner may retire the # from his own stable. I am from Pennsylvania by the way. Others have also asked the same questions as I. So I'm not the only one. Just the first to talk about it on here.

I agree the number should not have been retired .  And people should not have to add letters.

When the subject of retiring the #3 came up on Nascar radio the hosts of the shows said Dale was more than a number and he wasn't the first to run the #3.  But the best point that was made was when the fans see the #3 we will always remember Dale.

So the same could be said about the #27.   Greg was more than a number.

I see where you're coming from but how much does a number mean to people these days?  Growing up I watched Danny Lasoski race the Forbrook 5 car every week.  Once he drove a different car, that was very strange to me but it didn't seem to bother him.  What if Greg was still racing?  That same kid would have to get a different number then too.  What if that same kid is offered a ride with another car where they have an established number?  Do you think that kid would back out of the ride because he couldn't have "his" number?

Kinser with 11 and Sammy with the 1 and maybe Schatz with the 15 are the only ones I think of as the number being a part of who they were.  Look how many different numbers Wolfgang had.

The Nazareth (Pa.) Half-Mile retired Jackie McLaughlin's No. 83 after he was killed there in the 1960s. The number remained retired at Nazareth right up until the track closed in 1988.

Riverhead (N.Y.) added a lap to every Modified feature (regular shows there became 36 laps) after Charlie Jarzombek was killed at Martinsville (Va.).

I agree with you and I am a fan of Greg Hodnett. I am sure if Greg was alive now and was asked if he would like his number retired if he passed away, he would say no. I would bet no driver would ever say they would want there number retired. Lots of better ways to honor Greg than this.
