Just saw the IRA race at Beaver Dam Raceway for July 28th has been cancelled for scheduled track construction. Curious to see what this construction entails. Wonder if fencing will be installed in the corners. Time will tell

The owners of the race track are very good responsible business men. They are also involved very heavily into racing with their interests  outside the track itself. I really do believe they will make improvements and correct things to make the facility as safe as possible. They are good people that I'm sure have been affected deeply by this tragedy.

Now if the racers do their part by cage hoops and cage improvements that are very easily done hopefully we will never have to question why it took so long to fix something so simple.

Hoop or a couple extra inches above the head weren’t saving Jason. The clear need for a catch fence after the first fatal accident probably would have.

Only those who are privy to the actual injuries sufferred by Jason can comment on what, if anything, may have prevented his death. I do like the looks of the halo on the F1 cars. I can see where something like that would be added cage safety. Especially padded.

Go back twenty years.  See what the car builders and owners have done to improve the safety of the cars.  Then see what the tracks have done to improve the safety of the facilities.  That will be your answer.

IF Beaver Dam doesn't look ANYTHING like THIS after RE construction, they should be shut down......

the sprint car world lost TWO drivers because of THIS lack of safety....UNNACCEPTABLE!...PERIOD!

I was at a race at LaSalle  Illinois and a car got in the fence in the heat races. The fence couldn't be repaired so they gave evryone their money back. It was disappointing but the right thing to do.

Bring back Santa Fe, and LaSalle .

I'm not quite sure how that could be added into the cage. Wouldn't that just be a matter of making the cage bigger and taller?

And why can't F-1 just come out and call it a roll cage instead of a halo?

I'm not an engineer, but if you make a cage taller and wider without any other changes I woud think the integrity of the cage would be challenged. Adding the wishbone design of the "halo" should strengthen the integrity. As for why F1 uses the tearm they do, who knows? We'd probably need to ask Nikki Lauda, I think he still provides a lot of imput in to F1 safety. Smile

I believe the halo wasn't designed to be a roll cage per se.  It was implimented to protect the driver's head from incoming debris.  Wind screens were tested but the drivers that tried them complained of dizziness.

Other than the specific tube wall thickness agreed to in 1998 I am not sure of any chassis improvements. We put a funny car style cage in the winged super modified car (30x90 type car for the Pa guys) 25 years ago. Avenger did some pretty neat cage upgrades 20 years ago but that has all seemed to disappear except in some  wingless sprints.

Many tracks need to fix their facilities.
