CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS AT SQUIRE MEMORIAL SATURDAY AT BARONA!

(Torrance, CA, May 15, 2018) This Saturday night, in the midst of it’s historic 25th season, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series will return to where it all began, the Barona Speedway, for the first time in more than a decade.  The CLS will be on hand to contest the Jim Squire Memorial.  Saturday’s first race will be at 5:00 P.M.

Heading into Saturday’s event, the hottest driver in the CLS is 15-year-old Lakewood high school student Aiden Lange.  Over the last two races, Lange has dominated the competition not only by winning both main events, but leading every lap as well.  Despite his two convincing wins, a disqualification for being two pounds underweight in the season opener has cost Lange in the championship standings.  Coming into Saturday’s fourth race of the year, he is only fifth in the points chase.

Going into the race at the original home of the CLS, Bermuda Dunes Jeff Dyer sits on top of the point standings.  The California Highway Patrol Officer leads second place Jarrett Kramer, the 2010 CLS champ who lives in Spring Valley, by 11-points.  Lakeside’s Brent Sexton, a two-time champ who was there when it all began for the CLS at Barona, is third in the standings and only trails Dyer by 14-points.  Five-time champ Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita was leading the standings heading into the race two weeks ago at Ventura, but when he dropped out of that race while running fourth, he also dropped from first to fourth in the championship chase.

Grant and Dalton Sexton, the sons of Brent Sexton, are ranked first and second in the “Rookie of the Year” chase.  The Barona facility is literally in the teenager’s backyard.

In addition to the CLS, the Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Ponies, Pure Stocks, Dwarfs, Junior Sprints and Mini Dwarfs will also be in action.

For fans wishing to attend Saturday’s race, the Barona Speedway is located at 1754 Wildcat Road in Lakeside.  The office phone number is (619) 749-8115 and the track website is www.baronaspeedway.com.

After Saturday’s race in Barona, the CLS will be back in action at the annual Salute to Indy with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at Perris Auto Speedway on May 26th.
