BRODY ROA WINS VENTURA USAC/CRA RACE!
(Buena Park, CA, May 9, 2018) One week after winning the VRA Sprint Car main event at the Ventura Raceway, Brody Roa returned to the ocean side oval and won his first USAC/CRA Sprint Car main event of 2018. The win, which was his fourth in eight starts this year (his other three wins were in the USAC West Coast Series), allowed the Garden Grove, California driver to close to within nine points of first place in the championship standings. The series next race is at Perris Auto Speedway on May 26th.
Despite the heat wave that was gripping Southern California, Roa and the other 21 USAC/CRA teams were greeted by less than warm conditions at the picturesque track. Chilling winds, that were coming off the ocean that is located just outside of the track’s boundaries, kept everyone in the large crowd bundled up all night long.
While the air temperature was cold, Roa and the BR Performance team were hot right out of the box. The veteran driver qualified 2nd fastest and came home second in his heat race.
In the expanded 40-lap main event on the tiny dirt oval, Roa was coming from the third row. He bided his time running the inside line and picked cars off one by one until he was on the leader’s tail. He snatched the top spot away on lap 10, but the yellow flag came out when another car spun. The race reverted to the last completed lap and Roa was sent back to second.
Once action resumed, Roa stayed glued to the front-runner and finally wrestled the lead away at the end of the 13th circuit. From that point on, despite a yellow and a red flag, he led the rest of the race. The only real challenge occurred when he drifted wide off turn two and had to fight off the second-place car late in the going. After that, it was all Roa and the #91R. He took the win by nearly a half straightaway.
“That was exciting for me,” the happy winner revealed to the crowd when interviewed after the race. “I did not know where these guys (second and third place finishers) were and I got a little nervous and thought I was going to have to go to the top in the lapped traffic. We are stoked to come away with the win.”
“We came here last weekend with the car how we normally start,” Roa continued. “Zac (crew chief Zac Bozanich) and I were talking and we threw a couple of things at it to try. They worked! We were here to learn. We applied it tonight and it paid off.”
Roa was originally scheduled to be off until the May 26th Salute to Indy, but he got the call to run Michael Phulps #56 in the Peter Murphy Classic at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on May 19th.
