Western Springs Speedway hosted round 1 of the three round International Sprintcar Series. A strong American contingent was brought down for the series consisting of Tony Stewart, Shane Stewart, Kyle Hirst, Brad Loyet and Jonathan Allard.

A special test race was contested on the night with the USA represented by the above excluding Allard and New Zealand by Jamie Larsen, Jamie McDonald, Michael Pickens and Dean Brindle. The first race saw New Zealand take the win by 19 points to 17 but the Americans fought back to record a 19-17 win in the second race. With the teams locked at 36-36 it was decided the fastest lap by either team would be used as a tie-breaker and it was the current New Zealand champion Jamie Larsen who set quicktime to win the test for New Zealand.

Format for the main show saw each driver contest two heats. Our American friends ran into some trouble with Allard and both Stewart's failing to finish a heat each and requiring the B-Main to transfer to the back of the A-Main.

The A-Main was an exciting race. Michael Pickens took the lead and led for the full 30 laps to take the win. Hirst ran second early only to fall back a couple of spots as the local drivers dealt better with the lapped traffic. Hirst would recover in the second half of the race to take second. Allard collided with Loyet mid-distance which led to some push and shove between the two on the infield. Tony Stewart made a charge through the field, running as high as fourth before settling for seventh. Shane Stewart made a late charge, running as high as third but was passed by Daniel Eggleton late in the piece, settling for fourth.

The A-Main is summarised in detail at my website www.percysnzspeedway.com

I don't have the Midget results on my site but Zach Daum won the Midget A-Main on track only to weigh in 3 pounds too light on the scales. That elevated Shayne Alach to victory lane ahead of Brock Maskovich and a young driver with plenty of potential - Breyton Davison rounded out the podium. Brad Mosen came in fourth place. Michael Pickens is currently chasing an engine issue and did not make the Midget A-Main.

Night 2 was hosted by Palmerston North Speedway. The track is a very narrow quarter mile. Brad Loyet was a non-starter, flying back to the USA following an incident with officials at round 1. Jonathan Allard probably wished he had taken a similar route, suffering a big roll on the first corner of his first heat. Tony Stewart was another to find the Palmerston North fence, riding over the right rear of a local competitor.

Michael; Pickens started on pole and led away from Jamie Larsen. But the man to watch was Shane Stewart who passed Larsen up the inside then went to the lead mid-race when Pickens slipped up the race track.Kyle Hirst got involved in an incident with Jamie McDonald but was able to continue with front wing damage to claim fourth. Shane Stewart salvaging some American pride by taking the win ahead of Pickens and Larsen.

The third and final round happens this Saturday night back at Western Springs Speedway.

Question.. When Americans go to Aus do they only take a suit case or do they pack a car into a container? How much of a full racing outfit is sitting across the pond for both Americans in Aus and Aussies un USA?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

As far as I am concerned, most Americans that go over there to race have cars there that they drive. I think Loyet sends a car over, as I think Stewart did as well, just judging by the pictures and they look identical to their American Cars. The Aussies that come over here to race in our summer run cars based in the USA for the most part, but same as with the Americans, there may be a couple that ship a container full over this way.

Depends.  Most (as in the vast majority) try and get hired as a driver for a car owner in AUS so they pack up their driving suit, seat and clothes and go over.  Cars, etc. are all AUS owned and already there.  Schatz sends his own cars over. Not sure anyone else does.  When AUS come here it's similar deal, but I know Jamie Veal usually sends his cars over or at least has in the past.  He may now have a stable of cars he keeps here during our winter and may even just have a specific car built for him over here - I think Brent Kaeding either imported or built his car this year.  Maybe he stores it in their shop too.

The final night of the series took place back at Western Springs Speedway

Track conditions were awful with the track rutting up quickly. Frequent grading was required to produce a raceable surface. Tony Stewart walked out of the meeting leaving Kyle Hirst, Shane Stewart, Jonathan Allard and Michael Pickens to do battle for the spoils. It would be Shane Stewart making the most of double file restarts, taking the $10,000nzd winners cheque.
