Jimmy Trulli holds off Sean Becker to win a spooky good finish at Marysville Raceway season-finale on Saturday
Marysville, CA – October 28, 2017…The penultimate Winged Sprint Car event of the season in Northern California invaded Marysville Raceway on Saturday night with picture perfect weather presented at the quarter-mile. When all was said and done it was veteran driver Jimmy Trulli of Placerville that held off a torrid late-race charge from Roseville’s Sean Becker to pick up the $2,000 win at the Gold Fever H&H Trenching Sprint Spooktacular.
Trulli was aboard the Ingraham Motorsports No. 93 machine during the night and got the jump at the waving of the green flag from the pole in the 25-lap feature. Numerous caution periods and couple red flags plagued the flow of the contest, but in-between the stoppages the action remained entertaining.
Throughout the race Trulli continued to his marks as Sean Becker tried to find a way by, hounding him in second. Becker, the six-time Silver Dollar Speedway champion, was driving for car owner Dan Monhoff and continued to get faster as the main event wore on. With a few laps remaining traffic came into play for Trulli and it bottled him up just enough to allow Becker a chance to make it a battle for the win. With the crowd coming to their feet the duo went side-by-side as the white flag waved.
With a lap car in play off turn two it was anybody’s game, but Trulli squeezed by on the inside and went on to take the checkered flag by 0.218 seconds over Becker. The finish was as good as you’ll see in sprint car racing and a great way to cap the season at Marysville Raceway.
Penngrove’s Buddy Kofoid, Auburn’s Andy Forsberg and Colfax racer Colby Wiesz rounded out the top-five. Forsberg’s charge was particularly exciting, coming from the rear of the field after an early race bicycle. Heat races went to Justyn Cox, Justin Henry and Jake Haulot. Forsberg began the night by clocking the fastest lap in qualifying with a lap of 12.264, beating out 21 other competitors.
The inaugural Western RaceSaver Sprint Car event at the Marysville Raceway provided a fast-paced main event that saw veteran driver Monty Ferreira pick up the victory. Ferreira was able to fight his way past teammate Matt Demartini midway through the feature to grab the win.
Demartini, Cole Danell, Mauro Simone and Kyle Rasmussen completed the top-five. The division has been one of the fastest growing in all of California and should be a fun one to see more often in the Northern part of the state next year. Nine cars made the trip north with heat races picked off by Cole Danell and Monty Ferreira.
Veteran Terry Schank Jr. charged to victory in the Wingless Spec Sprint portion of the night. The 2017 season may have not gone as Schank would have hoped overall, but he reminded everyone on Saturday that he’s still one of the best business out west when it comes wingless spec sprint racing.
Fellow veteran Shannon Newton didn’t make it easy on him however, and kept the Santa Rosa racer honest as the feature wound down. With time becoming a factor the race was shortened to 15-laps and Schank ultimately took the checkered over Newton, Dan Hayes, Dan Gonderman and Trey Walters in the top-five. Nine spec sprints were on hand with Gonderman winning the lone heat.
The BCRA Midget Lite portion of the night was captured by Scott Kinney, who held off the late charges from son Hunter Kinney. The midget lites put on a very fast main event that saw Kayla Green come home in third, Emilee Lindgren in fourth and Danica Joe Parker in fifth. Eight cars signed in during the night with the lone heat race claimed by Kayla Green and fast time set by Scott Kinney.
The Economy Sprint main event looked to have been won by Cameron Haney, but after executing donuts on the front stretch he was disqualified. Donuts can only be performed in the corners because of safety issues, which has become a normal rule throughout Northern California. This handed the win over to Tyler Meadows. Jeff Macedo, Chad Thompson, Matt Beardslee and Cameron Haney Jr. rounded out the top-five. Seven cars were in action with Haney winning the one heat.
