Saturday night Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, TX hosted the G.W. Elkins Memorial Southwestern Championship
sanctioned by the Elite Non-Wiing Sprint Car Series (RaceSaver Sprint Series rules).
The Southwestern Championship was one of the premiere Super Modified races back in the 1960s - early 1980s.
G.W. Elkins was one of the founders and former president of the National Championship Racing Association (NCRA). G.W. was also the promoter of the famous Amarillo Speedbowl.
Pete Elkins (G.W. son) and Nathan Bischel and family did a great job promoting the event, not to mention working the track after a 2 hour rain delay to provide a great racing surface.
This year Emmitt Hahn was the Grand Marshall (also a 2 time winner of the race) and also in attendance was Sprint Car Hall of Famer Shane Carson providing his support of the event. There were also numerous old supers on display for the fans.
A great turn out of 37 cars and a solid payout for the series. It would be great to see this event continue to grow and turn into the event it once was.
