We've seen the countless threads on this board about Donny Schatz and where he stacks up vs. drivers from different eras and so on and so forth. That is a fun debate and all but I just watched the highlights from Las Vegas and all I can say is WOW. That track was rough. We all know Donny's wheelhouse is dry slick tracks but on this night, it was a rough, elbows up surface and yet the same result we've become so accustomed to: Donny wins. He didn't pedal it through the slick like he's so good at doing, he gassed it up and hammered the shit out of it while bouncing through the ruts. You can argue all day about how he would've done in any previous era but the fact is, we'll never know. What we do know is, right here, right now, he gets it done. No matter if it's half miles, bullrings, slick or tacky, whether he's in PA or anywhere else, no one is better. Even if we get tired of him winning sometimes, we all need to take a second and appreciate the greatness we're seeing. It won't last forever and even some of his harshest critics will one day appreciate the fact that they got to see an all time great in his prime making things happen with a sprint car that so very few have ever been able to do.

I heard Brad Doty's opinion on Winged Nation, which is why I started the last thread about Donny.    I'd really like to hear an opinion from Kinser.

Donny is one of the best to ever put a helmet on. The guy can flatout drive a sprinter and one of the cleanest drivers out there. I didn't care for him at first, but as I get older I am appreciating more and more what he can do behind the wheel of a sprinter! Go Donny!

I've know I've only been to like 20 or so Outlaw shows in my life, but Donny Schatz has never won an Outlaw show when I've been in attendance. I went to Knoxville for the first time last year, and Jason Johnson ended the streak..... you're welcome, haha.  I was supposed to go to Volusia this year, but that trip fell through, that trip would have ended my streak.  Who knows how long it'll go?

He is so easy on equipment. Only he can go like that in the rough and not break it.  He completely hosed everyone on a crazy rough track a year or two ago.  Certainly approaching legend status considering how good he is in the slick as well.   Hes very good and the other very good guy started in the back.  The great ones stay home now.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I would also like to mention that I was shocked Brownie didnt run the bottom on that final corner. Solid run for him though.

Schatz is just so good it is unbeleivable

Certainly the greatest of this generation, would love to see the races him and Kyle Larson would have week in and out as I think he's the closest competitor to him and probably the best of the next generation of sprint car drivers.

So easy to question decisions on the line but it wouldn't have mattered - great run and second to donnie like that is a win.

I think his racing down under helps prepare him for the "rough" tracks state side.

Great observation! There have been numerous mistakes made by Donny's competitors when they are leading that has handed him a win. Not taking anything away from him, but those mistakes have added up. Stewrat was leading early and gets loose trying to pass Dobmier trying to lap him, gets caught up and loses the lead and then some. Brown passes Donny down low in four coming for the white flag.......then goes high in four coming for the green......how stupid is that? All Schatz had to do was go low where he'd been passed on the previous lap and win at the flag.

Schatz did in fact flat out out drove Brian Brown last night, not once, but twice. It takes a very determined driver to run the holes to make the moves needed in order to win. So much reminded me of Penn National back in the 70's with the holes & the lay out.

Good to see Logan back in contention with last years equipment against all new stuff the race against.

Just go with me sometime.... I guarantee you he will start on the pole of the dash and on the pole of the A-Main and lead every lap. The you and I can kick each other in the ass wondering we dropped good money on an Outlaw show!

He can most definitely dominate frrom the pole, but he can also race his way through the field! He is the best driver running the best and most lucrative series in the world! Give the guy a ;ittle credit, if you give him a racey track the guy can win from anywhere, and not just WoO shows either!

Donny keeps the car under him and is smooth. Doesn't spin the tires, picks the correct groove, keeps the momentum up, is patient and doesn't overdrive the car and he doesn't make many mistakes. He is a great driver.

And his car.....his car seems to stay stable, the weight not pitching too much to one side or the other, no matter what the surface is. He gets forward traction more than the others it seems. Shocks maybe? They have found something, that is for sure. They are a great team, one of the best ever.

Gosh, I remember how Kinser dominated and folks were sick of him winning. Now we look back on those days with fondness.Donny has never been one of my favorites, but you have to give him credit now. I am developing a great appreciation for him and his driving. He is one of the best that has ever been....and he keeps winning and winning.

I'm the same way.  I used to be anybody but Schatz, after awhile I got over it and started appreciating the greatness.  No matter where he starts at Williams Grove, I make it a point to locate the 15 car during the race and it's usually worth my time to watch.

It is so nice to hear the nice comments. I have watched him starting when he was racing go carts at Springbrook ND. I think to begin with Donny was kind of shy when he was younger. I got to BS with him for about an hour in Pennsylvania quite a few years ago while my wife was attending a national archery tournament. We happened to be staying at the same hotel that he was at and we talked hunting in western ND for about an hour. We have gotten to know his mom better than the rest of the family and she has always been so nice to us. I am so happy for him and his whole family. He has provided us with many hours of fun filled entertainment over the years. Its so nice to follow a young kid growing up and then seeing him grow up and have so much success. What a nice family.

Very well said.  I'm not a Donny fan, Jac and now Sheldon are my favorites for life, but I have been saying this for a long time.  He is the best now and will probably go down as one of the best if not the best ever.  Yes, he is amassing a record to rival Steve's.

My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

Thank you Straight Shooter--I've been to every WoO race at Vegas since it opened, and yet it never dawned on me to make the comparison to Penn National.  I think Vegas has more banking, but indeed a LOT of similarities.  I never go to see sprint cars at Penn National, but the super sportsman/small block Sunday double headers were always good reason to head to Central PA.

The thing that probably impresses me the most is how smart he is. I've watched what you're describing happen so many times. Donny just doesn't make those mistakes. It's uncanny how he seems to go just as hard as he needs to. He almost always positions himself in traffic perfectly and when he needs to be a little patient, he's just patient enough to do so without screwing himself. He's renting space in the heads of just about any sprint car driver on earth. No one gets in Greg Hodnett's head except for Donny Schatz. I remember a couple of years ago, Greg inexplicably went to the bottom on a restart and Schatz motored right on by. It's not too often I see Hodnett do something (and Hodnett is also one of the smartest racers there is) that makes me think "what the hell is he doing?" but I'm convinced he knew Donny was back there and he really didn't know what to do and it forced him to make that mistake.

I don't like watching him win--all the time--actually anytime--but you are absolutely correct.  He is unreal on any surface.  To compare to the rough surface you speak of from Vegas (I have not watched the highlights yet) I watched him run Rockford last July and holy rough surface!  He and Gravel were the only cars that drove it like they stole it and Donny was just a bit better most of the race for the win.

I'll go one step farther--not only has he won well, but he has also lost pretty well for the most part too.  Last year's Nationals were a great example.  He was unhappy about the way Jason raced him from the way it sounds but if you watch the replay of that race, Donny stands in victory lane and gives Jason genuine congratulations.  He also spoke very highly of Jason's performance that night.  What do you think Sammy would have done in that situation?  (Ironically, I am a bigger fan of Sammy than Donny but Donny definitely handles these situations with more class)

We are seeing one of the greatest ever--and many will argue we are in the midst of seeing THE greatest ever.  Not ready to say that yet, but might have to change my tune in 10-12 years.  We'll see.  Hard to take the torch from the King and pass it to Donny now.  But, only an idiot would argue they don't deserve to be talked about in the same breath.
