A year ago Sprints On Dirt announced their new unlimited engine/weight format and new Hoosier spec tires.

Here we are now with the tremendously successful first season in the books that saw great, competitive racing; 410 and 360 wins, 305s 2nd and 3rd; decreased costs; and great fan interest.

There were plenty of skeptics and numerous experts told us why it wouldn’t/couldn’t work.  I think they are the same people who told us that Trump couldn’t win the 2016 presidential election.  They seem to have moved on now, probably feeling sorry for themselves.

With the short-lived, over-hyped NSL 360 deal dying a quick death, NSL now shutting down its 410 deal, numerous 360 shows canceled in 2016, and less than full fields s at WoO and ASCoC shows, does anyone see a problem?  The sprint car world has lived and died by the 305-360-410 mold; lately it is dying more than living in too many areas.

Meanwhile, the unlimited Sprints on Dirt SOD marches forward, full speed into 2017.

You don't say it in your post, but it looks like you're telling us that car counts were way up because of this program?

Unfortunately in today's world there are way too many people quick to bash anything new that comes along.  Then after it turns out to be something that works they crawl back into their ugly black hole of negativity they live under waiting for the next thing to bash, while never admitting they were wrong the last time they were on the "bash wagon."   I applaud what the SOD is doing which lower costs for racers while offering good competitive racing for the fans.   I hope for continued success in year two and many years to come.

Don't mean this to be a bashing of SOD, I applaud what they are doing with the rule changes this year, but throwing a statement of "and less than full fields at WoO and ASCoC shows" is just not true, when you look at the facts over the last 2 years.

WoO 2015 - 74 races, avg car count 33.43, 8 races with less than 24 cars
WoO 2016 - 80 races, avg car count 33.39, 8 races with less than 24 cars

AS 2015 - 45 races, avg car count 35.5, 5 races with less than 24 cars
AS 2016 - 42 races, avg car count 37.0, 1 races with less than 24 cars

SOD 2016 - 10 races, avg car count 20.6, 7 races with less than 24

In conclusion, over the last 2 years, the average car counts for the Outlaws and races with 'less than a full field' have stayed steady, while the All Stars have increased their car counts, and decreased shows of 'less than full fields'.

I'm not familiar with SOD.  I only know that they're based in Michigan.  I went looking for their unlimited weight/engine fomat etc. on their website but didn't find much. Reading it leads me to believe it's unlimited wieght/ unlimited engine displacement and the only deciding facor is the tires? Is there more to it than that?

Go to www.sprintsondirt.com, click on the Competitor Info tab, then Rule Book.  It is all right there.

BillV99 - The post isn't a bashing of WoO or ASCoC either, merely a statement of facts.  Both groups are leaders in sprint car racing and deserve the greatest respect.  However, not every track can run them every week and not every driver can afford to step up to that level.  Racers need to have somjething between them and nothing.

When the groups go up to Michigan, they should never have short fields, but it happens.

Thanks for that info Bill, the OP's statement about car counts seemed pretty off.

Great for SoD, happy it worked out for them. However I see this as more of an exception than the savior of sprint car racing.

Your post was a 'statement of facts'?  Ok, here's some more facts for you...

Over the last 2 years, there's been 10 races in Michigan from the Outlaws and All Stars.  Only 1 of those 10 had 'less than a full field'.  So I guess you are right about that, it does 'happen'.

Hartford, MI, Friday July 29th
World of Outlaws
Partially completed / Rained out / Rescheduled for September 21st

What was the car count?  Oh, but it doesn't count and is meaningless.  Tell that to the people who were there.

It is great to have input from someone with ALL the facts.  Thank you!

I applaud SOD with what they're doing and wish them nothing but the best, but one thing that really irks me and I've seen other groups just as guilty is when they bring other series into their posts and are negative about it.  It's really unnecessary and diminishes their credibility.

Thank you, mudclog, I understand what you are saying.

I could reword my original post to read: "A year ago Sprints On Dirt announced their new unlimited engine/weight format and new Hoosier spec tires.

With a short-lived, over-hyped 360 group dying a quick death, and now a 410 group shutting down, numerous 360 shows canceled in 2016, and less than full fields at sprint shows somewhere, sometime, does anyone see a problem anywhere?  The sprint car world has lived and died by the 305-360-410 mold; lately it is dying more than living in too many areas.

Meanwhile, the unlimited Sprints on Dirt SOD marches forward, full speed into 2017."

Back to the more relevant information.

Each of the top five 2016 Engine Pro Sprints On Dirt by ARP drivers came together from different segments of sprint car racing in 2015.

SOD champion Brian Smith was a regular primarily at Fremont (OH) Speedway, but also at Attica Raceway Park in the FAST 410 series.  2nd place Steve Irwin ran mostly non-wing shows with only an occasional wing event. 3rd place veteran Mark Aldrich ran with the 360 SOD sprints.  4th place John Gall raced at Butler Motor Speedway in the 410 winged sprints.  5th place Justin Ward was a lightning sprint champion.

Wish we could do the same thing a couple hundred miles south.

Thanks.  I went there and read the rules. But something's still not clear.  Maybe you can clairify a few things?. No engine displacement rule, no wieght rule? And a spec series tire- same tire for everyone I presume, no matter which size motor or car weight? Why do they pump the motors and weigh the cars?

I'm pretty sure the political pundits you mention have no opinion on SOD rules, or even what SOD is...

If you want to talk politics, talk politics, & spare us sarcastic side comments, please

That said, I kind of like the idea of "run whatcha brung" like the good ole days...

But I have no idea if it would work nowadays

SOD  considers a 10 race schedule with an average car count of 20.6 a successful season. Got to wonder what their previous seasons were like that were not so successful.

I'm sure slowing the 410s at Knoxville down to the point where 305s could be competitive with them would really do wonders for attendance there. As in "I wonder where all the fans are".

I don't think the car count was way up from previous years and I think the number of races was down. I don't think that was the huge sign of why it was successful. I think it was successful because what most said couldn't work did.

I took in a few SOD races and I was impressed. I think as drivers had a full season to see what the series has to offer car counts will continue to rise. I also think more tracks will get back on board.

Unfortunately, in Michigan we don't have a Knoxville. Giving tracks, drivers and fans in michigan affordable sprint car racing is what the area needs right now.

So how was the racing? Were the 305's and 360's competitive with the 410's? Did it just slow down the 410's so that the smaller motors could keep up?  Does it boil down to everyone running the same hard, small rear tires?  Out of curiosity, are most of the tracks on the smaller side?
